1950's Merc SL - Bringing her back to life (and up to date)

the 190 is truly a thing of beauty
I couldn't agree more. Some pics from this weekend - these include:
- Reassembly of the stripped and replated rear view. I decided to keep the original glass, and I coated the back of the flaking mirror plate in alu tape, just to stop it getting any worse. Its a nice sign of the cars age though. I'll get pics of the inside as I have to take it apart again after the dipping plastic tab broke off in my hand.
- Re-fit of the front screen + leather trimming (and dyeing of any raw edges with makeshift masking tape & material brush).
- Progress on the hardtop, and getting it out of harms way... which is a bit of an aesthetic mile stone!

I did start another thread for the 220s - but I might as well keep it all on this one.
Seeing as the sun was out, I made use of the weather, and gave my 220 the Rat Rod finish I've been planning. I've put something between the bare metal and the clear 2k lacquer... so I'm hoping that it will last. I just need to get the roof painted in a high gloss black + tint the windows. Thinking of lowering it (alot), and putting on the same 14's and white walls as the SL.
Thoughts?

Having followed your thread for ages (and it doing nothing but make me want a 190) I hired one last week for a 24hr period when down in Nice. Did 120miles in it in the 24hours, and completely fell in love with it.
It was bodily very tidy and mechanically spot on apart from occasional starting issues cured by flooring it, but not so restored that it didnt feel old. Loved it. Did I mention I loved it? The general public went crazy for it, nothing I have been in has had the same reaction (although the E type I had the following week was close).
I am now looking at sheds and thinking hmm how much could it really cost to get it restored to a usable condition...
Gratuitous pic.

You did well to hire one, especially a half decent one. Sounds like the cold start may not have been working (if you found that lever?), or the idle jets were a little blocked up? I'm glad you got out in one, and racked up some miles - thats great.I was going to run the same colour combination, but everyone seems to pick silver with red... so I thought I better do something a bit different.
I'd agree that the public seem to have a real appreciation for these cars... and they are rarely seen these days. That reminds me, I need to do some more work on mine!!! Your drive is making me jealous.
Thanks for the pic... its nice to see a finished car.

So here we have it, not 100 percent finished, but enough to end the restoration thread. The day at Merc was a nice way to finish. The car will be in Instagram: PISCOLA90 for those interested.
Thanks for all the help, comments, questions and motivation... and apologies for the time taken to complete. Over half a decade of time, and money wise I'd guess £15k + the car itself @ £18K. It was a steep learning curve, but very worth it - I love the car
