The OP needs to go onto the various MB forums and have a read - yes, there is the odd person with positive things to say about the early ones but when the majority complain, that is pretty damning.
I would also recommend that the OP calls a couple of the recognised indies and asks their opinion. Grab a copy of MB Enthusiast and call a few.

And you purchased a car that has needed £30,000 worth of work/improvements.
Who bought the junk!!!
I bought a car that had all the problem parts replaced with later parts and all the problems specific to that model fixed.Who bought the junk!!!
It is called making an informed decision *grin*
That is why I would NOT buy 1999-2002 W220 without a ton of receipts, no matter how cheap it was or how low the miles.
Certain cars and models have different problems. I knew what the W220 S600L suffered from and bought one that had literally been maintained without regard to cost. It will run for another 100,000 miles. And that is why it took only two weeks for me to sell at full asking when the other V12's that were advertised at the same time are still for sale, even with thousand's knocked off the price.
If I saw a 2001 ML55 with the same level of history and maintenance, I would buy that too. But since I never saw anything like that, since most subsequent owners get on a slippy-slide of 'ouch, too expensive, sell' and repeat, the cars become effectively worthless.
Anyways, what would I know about barge Mercs.

Hi
Sorry mate but I bought the misses a ML270CDi 2003 with every extra there was, AMG, Designo, Sat Nav everything, sorry to say it was the worst car we have ever owned, everything from suspension to steering rack, heaters, and the build quality wasnt a par on real mercs.
Car only done about 4k miles a year.
Honestly I would recommend getting something else, C32, M3, S4 or even X5, drove a friends X5 of siliar vintage and was far better car than ML.
Sorry

We've been running a ML 270 '04 since March 04 and apart from one power steering hose failure it hasn't missed a beat. Was about to trade it recently, but decided to keep it as 6 years trouble free motoring is worth holding onto. I'm blatting it up and down from Edinburgh to Aberdeen every week and it's comfy, reliable, got all the toys and is just a nice place to be for long journeys. Cheap-ish to run and carries stloads of gear.
They have a terrible rep due to Clarkson's off the cuff remarks, but ours has been ace. Proper ladder chassis, and a low range box unlike that horrible X5 thing...
There has been an awful lot of negativity on here about the ML55!
True, it has it problems ie, a real penchant for tyres and brakes.
And yes some people have experienced truly terrifying running costs.
But when I worked for Mercedes, we used to deliver cars all over the country via trailer attached to a ML270 CDI. it racked up over 100k and other than servicing, lots of tyres and lots of brakes and I think a transfer box, it was great.
Those 5.4 lumps are bullet-proof too.
