It's back. The TADTS front suspension squeak on my 156. I haven't been using the car much through the summer - it has stood gathering dust while I invent spurious and often inappropriate opportunities to use my motorcycle instead. Only now, in a clear fit of pique, it has decided to make its feelings known in no uncertain terms at having been overlooked through the glorious weather and then pressed back into service as soon as it starts p*ssing down. The squeak is more of a squeal. People on pavements stop and stare.
Last time this happened I got a blank expression from the dealer. No, it isn't dangerous. No, nothing has worn out or is about to drop off. Yes, they really do All Do That Sir. It really does sound bloody awful though...

Interesting - I had an annoying squeak from the front suspension on the GTV from new. Took it into the dealer, who checked eveything but the suspension (muppets!) until eventually discovering that one of the joints had been assembled upside down 
Funnily enough, my brother in law (who also has a GTV) had exactly the same squeak, so I told him what the solution was. He took his into a different dealership, who fixed it but told him that it was a heat shield rubbing
My theory is that the heatshield explanation was simply less scary to tell the customer...

9 times out of 10 I trace the type of noise you describe to the balljoints.
All that you need is a mechanics stethescope (or whatever its called). They are actually only about a fiver, and when the end is placed against a component which an assistant moves, a noise can be herd. When the noise is loudest- hey presto, you've found the source.

SQUEEK on the 156/gtv front sus. mostly comes from the little anti-roll bar with two little ball joints at each end. we always replace them when the lower arms are replaced,or doing an eng.swop(the no oil

the little ball joints are always worn out,
they are cheep as we get them from FRAP in Italy
and not ALFA in the UK.
