Mk2 Punto power steering gone
Discussion
The power steering on my mum's Punto has stopped working Dash warning lamp's come on and I've had a poke around under the dash were the motor is but can't see anything obvious. Does anyone know what might be the cause and how to fix it? Or is this a garage fix only?
edited to add it's a year 2000 model with that funny city mode (which doesn't work now either!)

I have MK 2 Punto 1.9 JTD
Power steering went awol one evening as well. Warning light on, all fuses were ok, Drove home, next day it was fine, then 6 months later it went again, then worked again. Now been 12 months fault free.
One strange thing though, The battery is now on it's last legs, it barely started this morning, and after that the warning light for the Key Code was illuminated. However it went out after a re-start once some charge was in the battery. I can only surmise that there is something knocking circuits out if there is not enough power when starting the car. I am probally totally wrong, but I only have problems when the car has stood for a week and the battery just about gets the car going....

Just an update for you all, it's now fixed
Problem was an earth strap that goes from the power steering motor to the battery was not attached. Garage recon it's never been attached and was earthing through the dash wiring Lucky really as I've heard stories of needing new steering columns etc so this was a cheap fix.
