Driving back from the station one night last week, went for reverse to turn around at the end of the road by home, hmm, didn't quite catch, no matter, it rolled back... select first and the gearstick travel was a bit more than usual (yes, made contact with the stereo).... come to the driveway, got out to move the wheelie bin, and when I got back in I had 5th, 5th, or 5th.... bugger.

Took the trim off that evening, remarkably I didn't crack it either, and the ball joint out of the side of the stick wasn't where it should be, no sign of the plastic bush which was supposed to be holding it there either:

The large shaft to the left in that photo should be pushed up and the balljoint you can see should be inside that plate, with a plastic bush on it.

Helpfully, the wise Italians decided the only real way to get any of those bolts holding the white plastic lump in place out.. yep, car in the air, drop the catalyst section of the exhaust, undo some plate or another, then have an assistant with a 10mm spanner in the car.

Bugger that for a game of cards, it only needs a bush.. so, in the spirit of acquiring maximum spares, and I didn't really know if it was just the bush, I purchased this from the fine gentlemen at Autolusso:

No, our one isn't a 6spd, but the stick and mechanism are the same... and with a decent bit of fiddling I ended up with this in my sticky mitts:

With big screwdriver in one hand, to lever that plate out of the way a little, I managed to pop the bush over the balljoint - without dropping into the hole in the floor! smile

A good lever on the side of the plate moved the shaft back into position, and slid the bush into its new home as well.... and that, is a bloody good result for a Saturday evening:

All gears now selectable, and we're back on the road. I've measured up that bush, need to do a proper drawing and email it off to the old man... he's up for a spot of lathe work to see if it can be replicated successfully, so I'll then have a spare or two.

Have left the trim off for now, so I can drop random things down there, worry about new noises and generally make sure it's working as it should. Thread to follow on how to araldite a broken gear stick surround/trim back together wink

....as for transport during the slight problem period, yes, hire car.... and no, never ever ever buy a Hyundai i10!
