) My first 145QV used a litre every 2000 miles until 20,000 and then steadied off. Second one used about a litre every 4000 miles and now uses hardly any at all (56,000 miles now).
They all vary, but as mentioned above it can be up to 1 litre every 1000 miles hence the sticker in the windscreen advising you to check.

Mine used the full litre per 1,000 miles for the first 12,000 miles, and since then has levelled off to approximately a litre every 4000. It now has 68,000 miles showing. Funny thing is that I used Selenia for that first 12,000 and then changed to fully synth Castrol on advice from SGT. Not sure if the decreased consumption may be wholly or partly due to the different oil or whether it is a simple coincidence that everything had bedded in nicely at the 12k mark.

"during the initial period of use the engine settles, therefore the engine oil consumption may be considered stabilised only after the first 5000/6000km"
So if you have it where it says differently elsewhere please any help you MAY have would be great.
Alternatively if you can point out exactly where it says the consumption may be in the handbook that would be great !

My GTV manual (ok, so its a 3.0V6) has almost word-for word what pwig states. Also, it says to check every 300 miles regardless!
Luckily I used 2l over the 1st 8000 miles and none at all since (currently at 36000!)

Cheers, on another update the engineers report that Lloyds commisioned has shown that the vehicle was NEVER run low on oil, at any point in the vehicles life !!

My wife's 156 1.8 t'spark was bought at about 40,000 miles and didn't use any oil at all. We were quite surprised because they have something of a reputation for it. We had one service where we used Castrol Magnatec 10/40 and it still didn't use any (like maybe half a pint in 12,000 miles). Then the cam belt lost some teeth and trashed some valves at 57,000 and I rebuilt the top end. I used an aftermarket "Corteco" gasket set and replaced the valve stem oil seals while I was at it. Unfortunately, since then (now 63250 miles) it has drunk oil like there was no tomorrow. I have kept very accurate records of what I've put in between the rebuild and now. I let it bed in for about 1000 miles before I started keeping records but between 57907 and 63250 I have put in 6.5 litres. 862 miles / litre or about 1300km / litre (!) It doesn't visibly smoke, it sailed through its last MOT emissions test and, as has been stated in other posts, Alfa say up to 1000km / litre so I'm still within tolerances. It hasn't got any better or worse since the rebuild.
I'm also told that it was valve stem oil seals that are responsible for the high oil consumption on some of the cars "as built" so I guess I must have used seals of equivalent quality!
I also have a 215,000 12v 164 V6 and that does about 450 miles / pint. I guess they don't make them like they used to!

No. I'm told that in severe cases, they can crack the guides so I had a good look at them all with a magnifying glass but couldn't see anything. In any case, mine was a very light one (about 3500 RPM just as I lifted off to go from 1st to 2nd). It only bent the inlet valves. The exhausts were all fine.
