Told a guy he needed a new engine in his GTV today

Yes, I'd feel bad too! C'mon guys, give Pwig a break. He doesn't set the prices. That said though, I think that in many cases, dealers in that case should offer an alternatove in conjunction with the local engineering shop who are often able to repair... Perhaps this is not policy, but since block exemption, dealers can source a fair amount of parts and services from sources other than the manufacturers network.
As another story, the other day we picked up a 51 plate Nissan with engine problems. A retired couple bought this secondhand in September last year. The maunfacturers warranty ran out in October. THEY haven't had the car in a garage.
The problem is, the exhaust cam broke due to bearing cap bolt failure. This damaged the cap, and hence the line bored cylinder head. Thing is, some of the bolts were not 10mm hex set screws, but phillips head screws!!!
Cut a long story short- a warranted car would likely not be repaired previously elsewhere other than the dealers, right? A bit of investigating for the old couple later, and hey presto, the cams were out and a new timing chain fitted last year by the Nissan dealer!!
I have yet to verify, and discuss with the dealer, but it does point to faulty workmanship and the good news is that the repairs should still have 4 months warranty left. I may have just saved these people £1500!!
My point is thus, the customer is alway entitled to a full, detailed report of any warranty repairs which also list parts used. This may help either sell the car, or help subsequent owners.
