Brilliant motor. Not so great gearbox. Differential to be exact. Several people have broken them around the world. It would seem that there is a common fault with these cars.
Here in Australia, Alfa-Romeo Australia or ATECO Automotive(Alfa Dept) do not provide the service and back up as other car companies. The warranty does not cover you like most car companies would. Be very carful if you have to buy one. Trust me, I have one and have had allot of headaches and a sore hip pocket.

I've had a 2004 156 2.4jtd for 13,000 miles. It went in for a bit of work yesterday and they found out it needs a new gearbox as well!! Bit its covered under warranty thankfully.

Barbra change the record.

Not one GTA has been back to us for gearbox or differential problems.

i have an '04 147 GTA. it is seriously quick and sounds fantastic. i think the g/box is very good especially considering its front drive handling alot of power. the handling is nose heavy and she is a thirsty beast but performance, looks, noise and interior style makes up for it. My only real worry is residuals...what do you think trade in would be for a nice 2 year old 20000 miler?

Davey,
they still seem to be fetching upper teens, dependant on mileage and condition ....
and if you do trade in for a boxster, let me know, and we can go for a drive, I've an idea the GTA is at least as quick !

Tim i agree, the GTA is quicker than most things, a boxster S 'might' be about as quick but it would be close. no im sticking with the GTA for a while yet. i just got worried when a guy told me my car books at 13k which as you say seems like bull**** when they seem to be high teens still. how is your GTA?

the book is wrong, lowest price 147 GTA i have seen in £17500

cheapest 156GTA was a left hooker for £12500

ours has a recon gearbox fitted by alfa "as a gesture of goodwill"

Davey,
apart from the ongoing brake saga, I can't fault it !
I'll admit to being slightly surprised, but 23mpg and a litre of oil every 3,000 is about as bad as it gets.
Definately needs a wash though, all this salt is doing nothing for her good looks !
Yours ok too ?
cheers,
Tim

she is running fine, i know what you mean about needing a clean! she has a thirst for optimax, im averaging 22mpg...oil a little too but all alfas are like that im told ;-) my only other gripe is i seem to attract stone chips which is annoying but what can you do. still love the grunt and noise! saw a black 147GTA in cov last week to..
