We have a MiTo 155 and yes, the General Motors sourced M32 box is a weakness, but it is only the bearings that give in and this can now be done for about £300 from a specialist. The chap that did ours makes a living from it as it affects many Vauxhall diesel and VXR models. The symptoms are whining that matches road speed and twitching gearknob when rolling on the acceleration.
The outer exhaust shell rusts away (as with all FIAT products), just rip it off when it goes.
Our battery is a little dodgy but it's not original, buy cheap buy twice I guess. There are a lot of electrical systems in the car so worth bearing in mind.
The top mounts and drop links have been replaced a few times, again buy cheap buy twice.
Ours has done 60k miles in our ownership and the engine has been a peach throughout. It pulls quite hard low down and in the midrange. I also found out it has a hard cut limiter in the snow, which I didn't expect. Exhaust note is fruity for a little one, steering is direct and in Dynamic weighty, but it is epas so don't expect much feel.
Handling is good with loads of grip on the right tyres. Not a playful chassis so no lift of oversteer or anything like that, but grippy and predictable.
Interior quality is OK, grab handles on the door is cheap feeling and the basic stereo is not great. Looks nice enough though.
Wing mirrors are from a Maserati. Really.
Mpg is reasonable, it can get high 40s on a run and high 20s when playing, but generally sits mid 30s including town work. Long life services should naturally be avoided and change the oil every 10k as per usual.
I would recommend one.

I had two mitos on company lease, I spent roughly a year with both, so no real experience in terms of issues.
I do have a 16 year old 147 now though, and i wouldnt consider a mito as a replacement now, a mito is a good bit less comfortable and practical then a 5 door 147. In terms of seating comfort, and in my mind suspension sophistication, the 147 is better.
That said, a 155hp mito is an absolute hoot in terms of engine, id imagine you would need a GTA to get the same/more engine thrills in a 147
