Great advice, thank you.

It seem I may be quite fortunate in terms of choice of dealers. I live south of Oxford and there is an Alfa dealer about 30 minutes away in Reading and another about 40 minutes away just north fo Oxford in Kidlington.

I leased mine from Unity in Kiddlington. At that point they were the cheapest and I had no problems.

I have a good local dealer who I am happy to use for servicing, but they weren’t competitive to lease through.

Just been doing a bit more research and due to my error in comparing my MR310 Focus to the Giulia, the acceleration times (for what it’s worth) are basically identical. My Focus has a quoted 0-60 of 5.5 seconds Vs a 0-62 of 5.7 seconds for the Giulia, so I wouldn’t actually be giving up any performance!

I’ve also been watching a few YouTube videos to get a sense of the exhaust sound, it’s actually fruitier than I’d expected!

I think I’m a little bit in love! smile

You definitely won’t feel short changed in terms of performance - it’s a brisk car. I also drove a Golf R before deciding on the Alfa, and the Veloce didn’t really feel any slower.

My only other gripe apart from the overall quality is that you can’t turn the Traction Control off.

Excellent!

Did you go for the performance pack? I’ve read in reviews that it’s questionable whether adaptive dampers and an LSD are worth it.

No - the aluminium paddles are standard on the Veloce and I feel that the benefit of the LSD would be cancelled by the unswitcheable Traction Control. I was also really happy with the standard suspension in most situations. Plus, coming out of an E92 with 19" run-flats, this thing rides like a magic carpet...

Thanks, very useful.

It looks like there’s a Giulia Veloce heading to the Pistonheads morning at Alcon which I’m also attending, hoping I might get a chance to have a close look and chat to the owner.

Go and get a test drive.. I think the compromises compared with a larger estate car are well worth it.. One would never take an A6 or a V90 for a spin round the local b roads!

Had mine for just over a month and love it. I have the performance pack and you really can tell the LSD is there when cornering at speed.
I've just fitted the QF boot lip spoiler which, I think, looks great.

Misano blue is the quickest colour . . .

Those are definitely the wheels that you want. I have the turbines as you can’t upgrade to the 19’ QF wheels in the UK (there’s a Ti pack now that includes them now, I think). The other ‘upgrade’ wheel options weren’t worth the money - I think the diamond cut option look like they’ve come off a Vauxhall.

It's definitely no slower than a Golf R when rolling, just shame I've no longer got the (incriminating) dash cam footage to prove it.

Only had mine two months but absolutely loved it. Still miss it now - it's an amazing car to drive. Much more dynamic than the 4 series I now have - it felt much more go-kart like and more controllable. It never felt like it was trying to fight you like the Beemer does.

The only downsides I found were Alfa themselves when there was an issue (long story, ended up rejecting the car, but please don't let that put you off), the infotainment isn't great even compared to my previous 2015 Octavia, and the fuel economy is pretty shocking. I could never get more than 30mpg on my run into work and consistently get 35+ on the same run in my 440.

To drive though, it's in a different league to every one of its competitors. And those seats ... Stromboli grey with red leather is a killer combo.

Man I miss it.

Hmm interesting insight, thank you. How come you ended up rejecting and getting a BMW? If you don’t mind me asking?

It all started with a rattle in the dash. Like a loud knocking sound by the driver's side A pillar.

I won't go into lots of detail as it's a long and convoluted story, but Alfa screwed up massively attempting to rectify the issue and had the car for close to a month in total within my two and a bit months of ownership, seemingly still no closer to fixing it when I ended up rejecting it and the garage handing it back unfixed, actually with more issues than it went in with.

I just got fed up of having no use of the week old car I was paying for and Alfa weren't offering any other solutions. I gave them plenty of opportunities to sort something like replacing the car etc, but they refused to budge. I genuinely think they'd have happily kept the car for another month or so if I'd not kicked up a fuss.

Then the finance company got aggressive and Alfa's technical team filed a false technical report try to stop me rejecting it. I got hold of the warranty job card and Alfa warranty Teseo internal notes to prove there was an issue with the car, so they had to accept the rejection.

Gutted didn't even come close - I genuinely only sold my previous car as I wanted a Giulia Veloce, otherwise I'd still be in my VRS 230 now. I fell in love with the Veloce as soon as I saw it, just like I did with my old Alfa GT. Unfortunately the way Alfa conducted themselves made me not want to give another penny to them.

So I ended up having to find another car at really short notice ... BMW were doing some amazing deals on the 4 series, so ended up in a 440i GC with a few extras for £30/month more than the Alfa with the same deposit and terms, being able to pick from a few unregistered cars in stock. Still had to hire a car for 10 days in between which wasn't ideal.

No other manufacturer came close deal-wise; couldn't get a well spec'd A4, C Class, XE or IS for anything near what I'm paying for the BMW. Looked at the i30n and the new Mégane, but still nothing came close for value for money.

Never though I'd be a BMW driver, but must admit I really like it. The engine's amazing, especially with the MPPSK exhaust I've had put on, and the bump to 360bhp.

It just doesn't make me smile like the Alfa did. Every single day.

I'm definitely the minority though - in general the car is as well built as the 4 series, even better in places I'd say, and much better to drive.
