Hello ; anyone here running one of these at the moment . I`ve just found some old photos in the mid 80`s of a mate and I running around Scotland in a white Monte with martini stripes and its brought back good memories .
The car itself was 211FMX and had been subjected to a rebuild when my friend bought it and , because it was a Series 1 , much thought and space had to be given to applying the brakes .

I dont, but if you want to find people who do, try lancisti.net

Theres one chap on there whose car has an alfa v6 in it. and hes supercharged that

if theres any basic info you want to know I can probably recite it off the top of my head most series 1 cars have now had the brake servo removed in line with the modifications made for the s2.

Look closely and you'll see that is not a V6.

It's the nice Thema lump

Good point. You'd think (given my profile) that I'd know that

Sorry, I meant the V6 was a bit lightweight!

Slightly nuts, isn't it?

I can't tell you anymore, I'm afraid. Came across it in a forum somewhere (lancisti.net IIRC) and took a backup of the pics. It's a chap in Sweden who's built it I believe.

Ah well, I will just have to allow supposition and prejudice to fuel my opinions as usual with the following conclusions:

Looks nicely put together.
Probably bloody quick.
Probably bloody good noise.
Probably makes holes in hedges with its rear rather than its nose.
Want one.

Well, I can attest to the noise - even in factory trim it floody bantastic
The 8.32 is not exactly a slouch, so that thing should be quite fun, but I think it probably favours the sideways approach to hedges..

If too sane, I did happen upon an X1/9 that someone did the same conversion to. Now that would have made an interesting wreck to look at while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

Got to be quick, will come back if you need any Qs answered.

I've had an S2 Spyder since '92.

Bad points:

Brake fade (S2 obviates the servo - needs a muscular foot - standard braking is "adequate", but if you cook things on a country lane watch that fade...)

Meagre performance (Standard "120BHP" is probably optimistic - adequate torque though, sounds incredible with CSC exhaust. Is quick off the mark though - 1st is very short, although things run out of puff pronto)

Finding parts is not amazingly easy... Having said that, there were plenty of "race" and "prototype" versions made, and the Fiat part bin can be raided for "sympathetic" parts if authenticity is not a concern.

Tin worm... Later S2s are not such a problem, but watch those turrets...

Good points:

Very rare and individual - no-one knows what it is on the road, and it gets many admiring remarks / glances.

I adore the Pininfarina design (an associate who styles cars for a living tells me it's a favourite of his)

Superb grip - on the whole, chassis is very well balanced, although the tail can catch out a novice... (there was a road-test in the '70s that claimed a Monte would out-corner a 246 Dino)

Can easily be tuned to go like stink - is relatively light, and engines with 160BHP+ will afford performance on-a-par with modern machinery (brakes would need attention... Don't just go for a hooligan engine and ignore the anchors...seen the results from that...)

Steering is pin-sharp / crisp

Overall I love my Monte... Sadly, she may have to go later in the year due to circumstances (you CANNOT own a Monte unless you have a dry garage which may or may not be available later in year...) Keep an eye on the PH classifieds - she's fully restored with a low mileage...

If things change in the next couple of months I may keep the beast...fingers crossed...

I've driven a lot of quick Beamers / Hondas etc - although the brakes and acceleration are superior to the Lancia, they aren't 1% of the fun you get from a Monte - make no mistake, Montes are serious fun if you get a decent one (it took 2 years of looking to find mine...)

BTW, ignore anyone that tells you a Monte is a "specialist car" in mechanical terms - it's one of the simplest cars you could ever work on - in fact my old mechanic said it was easier to work on than the '60s Austin I had for running about...
