Looking at prices of 4C's lately I can't help wondering why people don't use their cars more. I mean there is a Launch Edition on Auto trader at the moment with 23,000 miles for £34,000. There's also another Launch Edition there with 3,000 miles up at £41,000. So basically those extra 20,000 miles have cost the owner £7,000. That works out at 35p per mile, for whizzing around in a 4C. That's just amazing value for money given everything you get for driving these cars it amazes me people awesome precious about it.

Your question doesn't just apply to the 4C though does it - it applies to pretty much every single non-mainstream car.

If you put miles on a sports car - Boxster, 911, Maserati, F-Type, 4C etc then it's going to depreciate faster than if you don't.

My view is that most cars are going to depreciate with time anyway, so you might as well use them. But other people don't seem to think this way. It might be that they have several cars to choose from, so can't drive them all. Lucky them.

Personally I find it quite frustrating

58,000 miles on mine. Just annoyed me that I lost so much ground to Christian last year!

I'm of the opinion, that fun cars are there to drive. What's the point of having nicely specced, great driving car and just keep it in garage and look at it?

I would also be wary of very low mileage cars, like 2000 per annum. I would be afraid, that it will start to fall apart when I drive it properly and do more miles in it.

I’d agree. Taken my Gtv V6 to 164k miles.

Commuting to work brought up interesting mini adventures and was something to look forwards to on the early or late commutes.

Driving it often seemed to keep everything working well as would get nice and hot. So even when the weather was bad there was no signs of rust, thanks to heat and airflow.

I’d even raise you to, Trackdays. My Gtv as been to a number of tracks. Being a passenger in a 4c around Thruxton I was amazed by how the ca handled various corners.

A 4c in a garage is like battery hens 😛

In short, no it isn't. It isn't an appreciating classic so even if it holds money, you're still losing money on maintenance/insurance etc, which doesn't make sense if it's not being driven. I've added 17,000 miles to mine in the two years I've owned it and in terms of the car's resale value it's barely changed (ignoring the dealer spread). So yeah, I relish the opportunity to add miles to it whenever I can.

I don't understand how people buy the car of their dreams then worry about mileage and value. If that's a concern they should just but a picture. Drive it and then drive it some more.

To quote the old saying: It's like having a gorgeous girlfriend and not sleeping with her in order to keep her keen for the next guy.

Ask yourself the question. Why do you want to buy the car? To look at or to drive? I know what I’ll be doing and it involves miles 😀

You are looking at this purely on mileage. The 23K miles car has shocking service history, needs cam belt and bolt check and tatty bodywork. Couple that to a dealer who doesn't know what it is, results in a cheap car. Could be sorted for 2-3K probably,

The other low mileage car (our one) is as good if not better than when it was brand new.

The thing is the 4C is as good to look at as it is to drive. Sometimes I just sit in my mine with a glass of Italian rose and it makes me very happy!

That strengthens his point even further, as that 23k miles car would be worth more if service history etc was better, so the mileage would 'cost' even less.

Interesting point. But if you were talking about a car that was 3/4 years old, all other factors being equal, I would probably take the car with 23k miles anyway. Low mileage cars that haven't been anywhere can easily be as much as a headache as much higher mileage examples.
