Yes, they are beautiful but - as an Alfa lover & owner (2) - must still point out how that transaxle gearbox set way behind you is connected to the gear-lever only via a cable.

The lack of precision which too often ensues can prove a real obstacle to enjoyable driving.

[NB: I say this only by way of generalisation and - for all I know - the one in the picture might have had that common issue sorted.... ]

While the problem with this current vogue for online classic auctions during lockdown (indeed any auction) is the practical difficulty of how do you check for problems like that, without any chance of a test drive before bidding?

?
I'm sure he is an Alfa lover and owner but all the transaxle cars are connected by a big direct rod not a cable. Having owned several the gearchange was nowhere near as bad as the press would have you believe. A well sorted GTV6 is an absolute beast.

Looks fantastic- a South African car I imagine as the main dashboard dials are split. The European spec GTV6s I think combined them into one binnacle.

Definitely a SA car - that green is a SA factory colour as is the interior (similar or same as Porsche 944). The SABS window markings confirm same.

I think there were 2 dash types on European cars?

Well I had a 75, a proper tarmac (circuit) racer, and I thought these were the same.

Rod or cable, it was a lovely car spoilt by the gear change, but I guess each car can be different and it's all down to adjustment.

I believe SA and European Alfetta GTV/GTV6s came with split dash then followed by the later combined or long dash as some call it. UK ones also briefly had an intermediate version of dash somewhere between the two.

A lot of the SA cars has air conditioning which was a rarely taken up option in the UK.

I don’t believe the AC was up to much?

Ah - maybe somebody modified the gearchange. I had a few 75's too. Here's a picture out of the workshop manual

If you though the 75's were bad you should try an early car !

Hi all

I've got a UK registered Alfetta GTV6 with factory fitted air con. It works fine. It's not as strong as modern ones obviously and it's never going to give you the 'climate control' of today but it keeps me warm in winter and cool in summer so as far as I'm concerned it's pretty damn good.

The other point to remember is about the gear change: the cause of the often poor and notchy change is down to the length of the linkages. it's not cable operated. it's mechanical linkages from where you are sat back to the rear axle. If you maintain the bushes properly and check from time to time that everything is tightened up properly, then the gear change is fine. In fact it's good. Alfa Nord second gear synchro was always dodgy so taking your time does pay. But that's a function of the synchro, not the change mechanism. It's amazing the difference that a bit of tlc to the gear linkage makes.

Its a beauty .. bidding ends tonight. There can't be many around particularly in this condition. To me it looks like good value.
