So Mrs Shalmaneser and I are expecting - and as I currently have a 996 and she has an even less practical 987 we need to get a family car. I'd like to get something a bit more interesting than a Golf and the Giulietta seems like a pretty good deal, and has the required number of doors. We're city based so won't be using it all that much on a day-to-day basis but for the odd big shop and carting the little one to grandparents etc.

Does anyone have one of these who would be willing to share their ownership experience? Having done quite a few searches online there don't seem to be any horror stories out there, we'd be looking for a manual but otherwise not fussed on spec. I'm pretty handy so I'm happy to fix the thing myself but will by and large be leaving the dirty work to a local specialist, so the less it requires the better!

Congrats on the forthcoming arrival!

I had a 2018 Giulietta 1750 TBi Veloce, so the most recent Cloverleaf but with TCT.

Probably the car that I’ve owned that’s got under my skin the most, and that includes a 987.2 Cayman S, C63, Honda S2000’s amongst others. I only sold it as I wanted something bigger and more suited to motorway commuting.

They look great, there aren’t many about, it always attracted positive comment, and I can say that having had two Giuliettas they are reliable and definitely don’t match the Alfa stereotype of poor quality and unreliability.

Dealer network is patchy (I refuse to use my local one) but there are plenty of good independent specialists about.

I’d have another one over a boring golf or any other hatchback at the drop of a hat.

Five doors makes them very practical, and they don’t even look like a five door with the recessed rear handles.

I’d say go for it!

I swerved on a manual as there's nowhere to put your clutch foot. So just be aware of that if it bothers you.

Ended up with a 1.4 auto sportiva which we've had for a year and happy with.

Good news is there's plenty about, so when you reverse it into the house, bits off eBay are cheap. Rear light? £25.

Nice thanks guys, it does look like a cool car and there are conspicuously few horror stories online about them too which is a very good sign.

If you'll forgive the thread hijack, what MPG will these do?

I'm tempted by one...

Fuelly seems to suggest 27mpg average for the cloverleaf, seems reasonable enough. I'm sure you'd get more on a motorway run.

Just over 30mpg average on my manual cloverleaf over 14k miles mixed use. It will do upper 30’s on a run.

Mines done 103k miles now, runs perfect, no issues at all apart from rear wiper sometimes not stopping at the right place. Hardly a big deal! Cheap to run in my experience.
Pretty punchy performance too. Make sure you try it in Dynamic setting if you try one. It’s fine in normal but throttle response is very noticeably sharper in Dynamic though. Standard stereo is pretty good too.
Good value and solid secondhand buy.

I agree with the wanderer. I have a 65 plate QV, so its the tct version. Ive has mine four years now and still really like it. I normally change cars often however I just dont know what else to get
apart from an unlucky gearbox replacement under warranty mine has been faultless and I am at 70,000 now. I use Autolusso in Poole and they are brilliant.
Its my wifes car and she gets 25 miles to the gallon. She drives it hard and she loves it and so does the car.
Go for it, great cars

What's the tct version? We'd be looking for an older one but hopefully lowish miles, got 8/9k to spend and there seem to be a good selection for sale.

What's the deal on specs? Any must haves?

TCT is auto.
Changed around 2014 from a manual only, which was the cloverleaf from launch 2010 ish, moving to auto only 2014 onwards. Car received facelift, interior mods too, at the time.

With regard to specs on earlier manual cars there were just a few options. Pan roof, full leather, upgrade stereo, satnav etc. Fancy triple layer red 8C paint was a very expensive option too.

Mine did just under 30mpg over 9500 miles of commuting including motorways and a lot of stop start traffic.

I had one, 2011 model which was remapped to 260bhp.

It was a good car, nothing major went wrong on it. Apart from the typical niggles but once sorted it was spot on. Economical, fast and relatively rare. I only sold it as I started working from home and always wanted a 147 GTA which so far has proven to be much higher maintenance!

The cherry on the icing was I purchased it for 5.5k in 2019 and it sold for 7.5k in 2021! Crazy times!

Actually went to see a white cloverleaf last weekend with a PH sticker on the back. Both myself and Mrs S were impressed with the quality of the car and interior, I think we'll probably go for one although a 130i is also an option.

The floor mounted clutch felt a bit odd but I'm happy I could quickly get used to it. Engine felt very strong indeed! Gearshift was very very long, both the other half and I both mentioned but I see there is a short shift kit out there which would be an easy fix.

At a wedding this weekend so will most likely miss out on a rather nice looking black one owner car but there are plenty about so happy we will be able to bag a decent one.

Spot on.
Guilietta very cheap to run, nothing gone wrong with mine in 3.1/2 years, on 103k now.
GTA likes to be pampered, shall we say, its worth it though!

I would happily have another GQV if circumstances called for it. It's a massively underated car which is good for a buyer as no one wants one!

The GTA really is different kettle of fish isn't it. I'm using mine at least twice a week on some fairly decent journeys and I get anxiety everytime I take it out, somewhat spoils ownership for me but the Busso makes up for all shortcomings!

Thanks for the help guys, we're picking up our Giulietta this evening which is exciting. Low miles from a private seller, it's by no means a minter but should suit us well as a first 'family' car.

Got a couple of minor issues I'm looking forward to tidying up, petrol filler cap is a bit floppy for example and a minor knock when accelerating hard which I reckon is almost certainly an engine mount. Will pop up a readers car thread at some point. Might also be on the look out for some teledials too for that classic alfa look...

It's white which wasn't our first choice but it was a very good deal so we compromised in that area!

Just bought a 2011 manual (well, registered 31 dec 2011) in black.

"competetively" priced (RTA cheap) but with some remedials needed and only about 6 months left on the belts by age, not mileage.

had a pretty clean MoT in januuary and a clutch in feb so hopefully not too many horrors lurking.

drivers door switch pack is inoperative, glovebox lid also. dashtop cubby doesnt latch and the antenna base seems to have the usual water ingress. the bay of dreams provided replacements so i'll dive in next weekend and start using it properly.

more, they say, as it happens
