Hi
All, always wanted an Alfa, always watched from afar.
So I thought id post this to see what peoples thoughts/recommendations are.
I'm going to look for a new commuter in the next year.
What I would like is an Alfa that is fun, reliable, preferably petrol as id like mind low 30s mpg min but at the moment I have a Diesel Civic but miss the petrol sound and my budget is around £4-6k. Preferably 4 door but not a major problem if not.
Looking forward to what people think would be suitable

Im not in the UK, so i dont know the prices by heart, but 4-6K should get you into a cheap giulietta i think. All, always wanted an Alfa, always watched from afar.

Personally i'd be looking at a 3-4K 147 myself, they are properly nice cars, and that kind of money will get you a good one. Just keep in mind that reliable is perfectly attainable, but you need to stay on top of preventive maintenance. the twinspark engines in the 156/147/GT all use oil, so regular checking and topping up will be needed.
I also think sound wise a 147 twinspark will sound better then a giulietta with its 1.4 turbo.

I had thought about extending the budget by a few more thousand and going all out for the top spec Guiletta. But we shall see.
I fancy something a little old school. Quite like the look of the above GTV tbh. Love the wheels and how its set it off.

4-6K will have you a V6 GTV i reckonI had thought about extending the budget by a few more thousand and going all out for the top spec Guiletta. But we shall see.

And i totally get the want for something old school, i just swapped a 1.6TS 147 for a 2.0 JTS GT, and even though they are just three years apart, the GT seems just a bit too clean and civilized. I think its mostly the engine though, it doesnt make any real noise at all, and the torque curve is this odd mid-way point between a TS and a JTD, and despite the fact it has tons more power and usable torque, i really miss revving the nuts off my TS to actually make progress. Im actually kinda bummed i didnt hold out for a 1.8 TS GT, technically slower, but i reckon more fun (even though that car would still have more sound deadening etc...)
If i had the money for a toy right now i'd half consider finding a 145 with a boxer engine or something old like that

TS engine a lot better than the JTS then?

Funny you should say that about a 145....I think ive found one nearby and its for £3k and has a 2l lump in it rather than the 1.8.

If you want something old school, absolutely, the JTS is a pretty modern engine, and combined with a lot of sensible sound deadening it feels rather characterless to me, the torque curve peaks at 3250 rpm and drops off sharply at the top, giving a very diesel-like power delivery and not a lot of incentive to rev. The fact that i dont actually need the top end power the JTS produces for driving around here (even shifting at 4K im often quicker then would be considered safe) doesnt help either.TS engine a lot better than the JTS then?
Sounds wise ive also heard that the CF3 twinsparks (147, GT and perhaps later 156s) dont sound as good as the older CF2s
3K for a 145 sounds expensive though, but a 2.0 will be a QV, and if it is in good nick, itll be going up in value id expect.

That's the description above. It looks in good condition but I haven't been to view it yet. Ive looked on Gumtree, there are a few others but the price seems reasonable compared to the other 5 on the market. Albeit the mileage is higher so probably a little overpriced when thinking about it.

This beautiful 145 started life as a 1.8 Twin Spark but was re-engined in 2012 with a 2.0 Twin Spark on the original 1.8 gearbox giving 155bhp and better acceleration. Fully rebuilt suspension with Koni Sport dampers and Eibach Pro springs. Full brake rebuild along with new discs + pads and braided hoses. New air con compressor and pipework. Stainless steel cat back exhaust system. 17" multi spoke alloys with matching tyres.

Sounds good, and a car with that much work/upgrades will obviously fetch more money then a base 1.4 which is one bad MOT away from the screapheap. That's the description above. Does anyone have a guide/link to a guide of what to look for?
