Andover - Thinking of moving there.
Discussion
Currently myself and MrsHorneyMX5 reside in a 1 bed flat in Basingstoke. As we knock on the door of 40 and our parents are aging we arrive at a position of needing to sell up and buy somewhere with a spare room or two (a garage/workshop space is also on the shopping list).
Whilst looking around Andover seems the most value for money place in the area with easy access for Newbury for work for me and the Mrs works from home 3 days, Warwick 1 day and London (Waterloo) 1 day so no problems for her either.
Just looking for the opinion of fellow PHers on Andover and surroundings. We've lived in Basingstoke for 9 years but I've only been into Andover once in all these years.

Andover is Military town and 1960's London overspill put together, with a chav contingent to boot.
NESW of Andover you will find plenty of villages and hamlets which will be much better.
Of Course Overton, W'church, wallops, Pewsey, Charlton, Hungerford, etc... Would be much nicer, but also more expense.
If you work in Andover, I would say go there.. Otherwise it's a place to pass through or avoid. IMHO.

It does depend on what you want! Id much prefer a house in Andover (there are nice parts) than a one bed flat in Basingstoke! what are your main priorities?
Indeed, that's where we're approcahing it from. Main priorities are:Easy link to Waterloo
Not too far from Newbury
2 Bed+
Enclosed rer Garden
Garage and driveway for working on cars (we have 4)
Some good local drivign roads
Neither of us go out ont he town anymore so the only things we look for are facilities like good doctors, a cinema, a coupel of good motorfactors, not a crime hotspot, that kind of stuff.
Here's an example fo the sort of property that floats or boat and is in budget:

Andover - not recommended..
Surrounding area - plenty of decent options.
What about Whitchurch?

I have lived in basingstoke (Chineham) for 16 years but work here also.
If you work in Newbury, how about further West, somewhere like Hungerford. You need somewhere not on the main line to london, for lower house prices.
Guess Andover is like basingstoke, nice parts and dodgy parts, just a question of finding a good value nice area

Did you move to the area?
Not yet no. We're in the process of tidying up our flat and gardend before putting it on the market. We've done some drive by looks at soem of the properties on offer. Still very much on the cards but the wife wants to up the budget and look at Winchester. This however conflicts with my chronic MX5 spending habit and motorsport activities. Divorce is looking the cheaper option.

Winchester is nice but a lot more expensive. I'd be looking at Weyhill or Charlton if Andover is on the cards.
Winchester is a very civilised place to live, but because it's only 50mins to Waterloo, you pay for the privilege! If you can afford it, I'd highly recommend - i would move back there.
Don't discount surrounding villages, especially the Test valley. Again, it takes money though.
I live a bit further west, and you get more for your money. I don't mind the commuting as it's not particularly busy.

The only nice-ish place in Andover that I know of is Enham Alamein. I worked there for 4 years and it's got (IMO, of course) all the best bits of being in a small village but you could (if you felt so inclined) walk into town in about 20 minutes. There's a small new-ish build estate there hidden away behind a wood and I believe houses go in there for around the £160k mark.
The main road through the village can be a bit busy, but it's the main A-road into Newbury from that area.
