Getting starting in affiliate marketing?
Discussion
I've had an idea for an affiliate marketing website. I've got a full time job, and this would purely be for a bit of extra spending money at present.
I've previously worked in the area I'm thinking of, and could write a decent "consumers guide" type site with some affiliate pieces linked in, rather than the entire site revolving around links. I've also written a bit of copy in the past and in the VERY distant past wrote a bit of HTML. I'm sure there would be a learning curve to get caught up to modern web skills! At the moment, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of risk beyond time and maybe a few quid on hosting.
I appreciate nobody who does this full time is going to let the cat out of the bag entirely, but has anyone got any pointers for a starter or any literature to read? Even a few successful sites to take a look at would be very handy.

5 years is a lifetime in affiliate marketing. That post was written before Panda update, before Penguin update, before the major link buying updates, etc.
imo its an extremely poor place for someone with no real knowledge to start today, as they won't understand which parts of it are now a waste of time, and which parts of it are actually harmful.
He's suggesting building back links in bulk via article directories. If you try that today you're going to get penalised in Google for sure.
I don't know what is a good beginners guide to start from today... but it isn't that. Look through his income report... most of his money is generated from telling other people how to make money Remove all that income and its not exactly impressive.

I've never heard of him, but at first glance it just appears to be another "I make money by telling people how to make money" joker. If these people could do it... they'd be doing it. Not trying to hustle money from newbies offering to teach them to do it.Similar to what is mentioned in this yesterday:

stackthatmoney - no
other one - never heard of it
In affiliate marketing you're just going to repeatedly run into the roadblock of "if this information is genuinely useful, why is someone selling it rather than using it?"
Tactics get burnt or stop working if they become abused or used too widely. It makes ZERO sense to share genuinely useful info publicly. Most of these "look at me I'm rich" guys are making next to nothing, outside of selling the "make money online" success story to other mugs.

But if it's easier to do this to make money then its a good move. You're quite cynical aren't you?KFC said:

So, what you're saying is it's easy if you know how/are very smart?other one - never heard of it

I think someone touched on this on the other thread but you make it sound very simple and straightforward. But, if I spoke to Lewis Hamilton about being an F1 driver he'd make it sound like a piece of piss!

Well in the other thread I was more saying if you're already good at seo then you need to be doing affiliate marketing, rather than working for someone else for a crappy £25k a year salary. If you know nothing about anything, you're still not going to be able to properly learn from some get rich quick scammer selling you ebooks and showing you pictures of himself on holiday.

As I hinted on the other thread, it does sound like those SEO people who sell SEO courses are basically like those FX trader trainers selling FX courses. I remember going to a seminar at Sandown. All these property and financial experts selling dreams of working part-time from home in the comfort of your own underpants. Not one Ferrari in the car park.
I take the point and agree about these 'experts' selling their wares not being the real thing, as they wouldn't be doing this if they were making real money.
But, there are so many conflicting ideas about what's good/bad in SEO/Online marketing. What do the best people do? Are they using trial and error to refine their own methods (and keeping these closely guarded)? Or, are there any genuine online communities or respected resources?

I'm finding that post quite hard to answer honestly without giving away competitive info. In general you can't really hide what you're doing though - anyone can view your source code of your own website. And they can use services like majesticseo.com or ahrefs.com to look at your offsite seo.
