Ok, before this topic is moved, hear me out ...
I've asked on various Owners Club sites, as well as the relevant forum on here, but I've yet to find a solution to my problem frown

I bought a VW Golf ('04 plate) back in February, and since then, it's been a pain in the arse.
Among a few other small issues - for the past month or so, I've noticed that the lights for the rev counter & speedo dials won't turn off - ever...
I think this is now draining my battery, and sometimes after starting the car - it loses all power, sits at about 700rpm and really sounds like it's struggling to tick over.
Sometimes this happens immediately, but more worryingly, sometimes it happens as I pull out of my street onto a pretty busy road...

I DID get a warranty with the car, and I HAVE already taken it back to the dealership so they could take it to a garage & sort it.
I got the car back from the garage, and the problem was still there. I took it back, and they took it to another garage - the problem still persists...
I really don't want to give it back to them - I'm starting to think the garages the dealership is using are taking the piss, and I can't bear to give my car away to them for another 2 days without a courtesy car (I'm only 23, so they won't give me one...).
I just want to try & sort the issue myself - then I know it's done.

I'm tearing my hair out over this one, and I really don't have much of a clue when it comes to car electronics (or indeed, any mechanical stuff).

Any help you guys can offer will be appreciated!

Cut out the dealer and just look in the local yellow pages for an auto electrician. Sounds to me like it could be a bad earth if the lights are staying on.

Really? You thought this one through? HTF can a 'bad earth' cause lights to be on?

OP - back to the dealer. "Goods not of merchantable quality" is the phrase you need. Don't mess about yourself, it will only make matters worse.

sigh..

Because IF the lamps have more than one earth point in the circuit and one of them
(earths)fails there can be a PD across SOME of the lamps in the reverse of normal and the current can be enough to make the affected lamps glow.
most car looms have multiple circuits and multiple earths and all sorts of interactions
going on and if one or more of the earths go's high resistance all kinds of
odd behaviour can be occur.

OP take it back and bang some desks.

And this is why people are getting seriously fed up with and leaving ph, why do idiots have to have a dig just because they think they know better, the op was asking for advice, not some wannabe `edd china` having a sarcastic dig.

Cheers for that, read the first few paragraphs so far & can already see how it'll help me out having this information.

Thanks for everyone's replies so far.
I'll be calling the dealer at lunch to have a word, and see when they want me to drop the car off to get fixed.

Thanks again for your replies folks!

Just off the phone to the dealership ... don't these places half talk some amount of utter ste?

Them:
"Ok sir, if you bring the car in on Tuesday, we can get all of the issues sorted out for you and have the car back to you by Thursday, but the last time you gave us the car, you were pestering for updates - I think this is why the issues were not resolved last time..."

Me:
"Ok, last time I gave you the car on a Tuesday, and you gave me it back on the Thursday - the issues weren't sorted."

Them:
"Oh ... well ... I can guarantee they will be fixed this time. But you have to leave it with us to get it all sorted out."

So yeah, I need to find a bicycle or something I can borrow next week, cause I ain't a fan of public transport..
I hate being under 25 frown

Make sure you don't pester them this time. Leave it with them, give them the 2 days to get it sorted, and then open up a whole can of comsumer-rights whip-ass on them if it's not.

Isn't there anywhere else you can take it, they sound like idiots?
Apparently so - I was phoning for an update daily as I wanted my car back.

I'm going to contact the folks who provided the warranty later tonight - it's some third party company who's name I cannot remember for the life of me.
I'm wondering if they'll let me take the car elsewhere, or if all work will need to be done via the dealer.

That's the exact plan I have in my head smile

Advise them that if they fail to provide a courtesy car that you will hire one and recover the costs from them, given their repeated failures to remedy the defects in your car to date despite having numerous chances.

Finally, advise them that this is their last chance to fix the car, if they fail then you will take the car elsewhere to get it fixed and will recover the costs of the same from them.

This is a heap of ste - I got given a courtesy car by a Ford main stealer at 23 (last year) with no hassle at all. Tell them to sort out their insurance policy.

I'm not overly fussed about the courtesy car to be honest.
I can cycle to work in about 15/20 minutes - so (in my opinion) I should be doing that anyway. Means I'll have more money to spend on petrol for weekend hoons biggrin

I'm going to make it very clear when I drop the car off on Tuesday that this is their last chance to fix the issues on the car.
If not, I'll take up the matter with Trading Standards and take the car to Verve (who'll throw in a nice £65 charge to just look at it) to get it all sorted, and send them the bill afterwards.

I'm not the best at confrontation, but the responses on here have spurred me on to put the foot down on this one.
Again, thanks for all of your input folks, it's appreciated!

Well, things have taken a turn for the worse.

Just off the phone to the dealership to see about dropping the car off on Monday night so it's ready to go into the garage on Tuesday.
The guy I spoke to has denied all knowledge of the car ever being booked in, and he's now telling me it's a third party issue that I should take up with the Warranty Company to get it booked into a local garage.

Really not sure where to go next with this...
Needless to say, I am absolutely fking livid.

Sounds to me like they`ve actually done you a favour, they sound like a right cowboy outfit. Get in touch with the warranty company and get it to a qualified auto electrician, just make sure that the warranty cost is for full amount and not one of these capped one`s, one national car supermarket advertises that all cars come with 12mth warranty but when you read the (very)small print it`s got a max of £500.

I'll be on the phone to the warranty company when I get home.

I've got a friend who worked on my previous car that I whole-heartedly trust - so hopefully they'll just let me take the car down to him.
I know Mick will see me right.

They are a right cowboy outfit, and needless to say - I'll be telling friends & family to pass on the message to anyone they know to avoid these idiots at all costs.

I'm guessing the garage is not a VW main dealer, and if they're suggesting you take it up with the warranty people, I'm also guessing the warranty is one of these independent Warranties Direct type.

If that is the case I'd recommend going to a proper VW dealer, with proper VW trained technicians, get them to speak to the warranty people, and proceed to do the work and claim it back.

Its probably the quickest an easiest way to get it sorted properly once and for all.

Good luck.
