Every single time somebody mentions something remotely to do with buying a car, somebody pops up with...

'Buy the X, and get it remapped'

Often its for more mpg, is the claim from some members. But surely it would take you a while to regain the circa £300-500 on fuel saving?

Are they really worth it? Sometimes i feel people think its the 'be-all and end-all' of buying a car.

mostly it's deluded BMW diesel drivers trying to convince themselves they've bought a 'sports' car.

It's a BMW diesel. It's boring.

People only mention the MPG to help justify it to themselves in my opinion.

In reality its a relatively cheap way to get significantly more power. (On turbocharged vehicles anyway)

orrr they want their reliable, practical family car to have a bit more poke?

I happen to know that a remapped 335d BMW is faster than a bugatti veyron AND better on fuel.

They might be boring and comfy but for what they are they go well after a remap

Certain modifications either need to be twinned with a remap or be twinned with a remap for slightly better results.

Not a hard concept rofl

Until you tell your insurance company - or something goes wrong mechanically and your manufacturer warranty claim is declined. Also, cheap is not sophisticated - so greater potential for internal damage; something more bespoke and suited to a specific car from an informed tuner is going to cost more - a lot more!

It's "Free power"...

Well, it's not, but if you can improve the performance of an engine with a simple no spanners modificcation, than why not?

Remapping turbo cars can have massive gains (providing the block can handle it). Simples... However, I dont see the point in mapping a diesel for power gains, perhaps fuel though. To get the money back however you will need to do this early on in ownership...

There's no actual evidence for it, but it is fact.

Don't be daft. With equal suspension setup a diesel BMW is as much fun as a petrol like for like. Or at the very least bloody darn close.

Sorry, but someone with an unhealthy obsession for 70s and 80s British Leyland crap and a variety of American junk is suggesting to someone to not 'be daft' ????

Jog on.

the obsession is the same as modifying cars in any other way e.g. styling.
I think people have remaps done more for perceived performance gains rather than mpg though (imrpoved mpg being a nice side-effect)

to be honest I reckon most of the gains felt by people after a remap (on most N/A cars anyway) is actually a placebo effect. Can you really feel the 5bhp extra whilst driving (apparently just using superunleaded over unleaded fuel can in some cars provide an extra 10-20bhp anyway. Also the tuning companies claims are always way over-exaggerated

However as mentioned above, after engine/exhaust changes a remap is actually essential to ensure fuel is burnt properly and efficiently and to maximize output

It is true that diesel BMW's are boring and will likely always be boring.
