Freelander 2 HSE Auto - Anybody have one?
Discussion
My Dad is looking to get a couple of year old Freelander 2 HSE. He fancies an auto, and quite like the one he drove.
Does anyone here have one? What are your thoughts?
I know the mpg isn't meant to be great (even worse in the auto) but it won't be any worse than his current car, so that isn't too much of an issue.
If you were spending £20-25k on a newish 4x4 type car what would you go for?

I`d have a look at the new Kia Sportage, supposed to be a cracking car, according to a local owner, and looks really tidy too, especially in the bronzy/orangy colour. Hyundai I35 is another good one. Another thing, why buy a 2 year old Freelander when a new Kia or Hyundai comes with at least a five year warranty, not a dealers used car 3 month one.

I know someone with one (56 plate, or thereabouts), tows a caravan with it, wears socks with sandals, obese, 50 something, bad hair. There's just something about these that makes me cringe. I appreciate this isn't the advice you wanted....

That was my first thought, but I don't think he was too impressed with the interior of the Hyundai's. He's got a Hyundai at the moment, so think he fancies a bit of a change and would rather something with a bit more quality.

FL2 Is a great all rounder in my opinion. I have seen up to 38-40MPG from a 2.2 auto. Very capable off road and drives very much like a car on road. The auto box is very smooth too
I wouldnt think twice if I wanted a small 4x4

They are superb cars. My mother in law has one and shortly will be chopping it in for another. They drive incredibly well with decent poke even from the 2.2 and knocks out around 35mpg in mixed driving. Hers has been abused by dogs, horse paraphanalia, mud, wellies and the worst three winters anyone round here can remember and it's never missed a beat over 55,000 miles.
Smallish 4x4 - no brainer.

get a real land rover... seriously
Discovery, range rover or defender
something with an actual frame
Why?Discovery, range rover or defender

A FL2 beats a Defender for comfort, fuel economy, and road noise. It is perfectly capable offroad, the only thing that lets it down compared to its (much more pricey) brethren is its lack of ground clearance.
Brilliant little 4x4.
Why on earth are you comparing a FL2 with a Range Rover? A bit like comparing an audi A2 with an RS6.

Honestly I work on a lot of 4x4's (mainly landrovers though) and the FL2 is so much more superior to any of the germans/Japs/Koreans. Not much goes wrong with them either
Best thing is to try one and compare it to something like an X3 or something of similar class and im sure you will agree
But go for one wich has the Terrain Response system fitted (most do)

We had one as a courtesy car from Land Rover, I wasn't massivly impressed when I took it for a drive.
It felt pretty gutless and there was a surprising amount of engine noise in the cabin. Also, it was only achieving 28mpg which seems pretty poor for a softroader.
We have two Discovery 3s at home and there is no way I would choose a Freelander 2 over one of them if I was looking at spending £20-25k on a 4x4.

Because if you are going to brave land rover reliability, than at least go the whole hog and get a capable vehicle not a car with big wheels.A FL2 beats a Defender for comfort, fuel economy, and road noise. If I was to do that then I would get something Japanese.

I would say that the FL2 has mush better reliability than the Disco3/4 and Range Rover. If I was to do that then I would get something Japanese.
Again the FL2 is perfectly capable apart from its ground clearance.
You are comparing cars that are 2-4x the cost of the Freelander, not the most fair thing to do. Also some people do not want a huge vehicle, so a smaller one may be better.
Have owned a 2009 Freelander 2 HST with 2.2 diesel engine for last 18 months and very pleased with it. No problems so far and get about 30ish to the gallon on local trips and 40ish on long runs. Very comfortable and very practical. Was considering what to replace it with in the next 12 months or so and to be honest I'm struggling to think of anything.

our freelander was very capable in the recent snow we had going through the country lanes... the bigger landrovers have much higher running costs. If I was to do that then I would get something Japanese.
the freelander has plenty of toys, plenty of room, the only trouble has been the common battery faliure. its a perfect all rounder
I have a Freelander 2 HSE auto bought new on a 10 plate, had no problems great on a long run for comfort and driving round town. Really easy to park as looks larger than it is. Only just found out about the Command shift on it , you knock the lever it goes to next highest gear and watch the revs fall, save about a tenner a tank been told. Not very economical can get a better mpg from my porsche.
Would definitely recommend, they now have an uprated 190 engine as opposed to 160 it makes a big difference as the 160 is rather sluggish. Very good of road and in snow great alrounder.
