I'm just about to list a car for sale, but the insurance runs out on Friday. I won't be able to list it for sale until Saturday.

So is there an insurance policy that I can take out and cancel once the car has been sold? Ideally I don't want to get whacked with a big fee once I cancel the insurance.

Just use www.dayinsure.com - but is it now a crime to have an uninsured car parked on the road? Not a problem if you can leave it on your drive.

So I can have an uninsured car on my drive and insure it when I take it out if needed?
I'll double check with the DVLA, but it sounds promising.

Speaking to the DVLA will be pointless and result in a massive phone bill and a desire to self harm. The plan as described is sound.

I had this a couple of years ago (or similar anyway).

I used my no-claims for my new car, and then insured the old car with another policy, but no no-claimns used. Paid all up front for both for the year. I had two weeks to get old car sold, so I would get a full refund on insurance on old car.

Certainly made me keen to sell!

I actually sold it within a couple of days, and then just cancelled the 2nd policy and got a full refund.

Hmmm, this report would suggest that I'm not allowed to keep a car on my drive, not declare it SORN and not have it insured http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12150923 The key thing is that I don't want to declare the car SORN.
