Currently got myself a snotter to tootle about in whilst my cash is going elsewhere. Just wondering if I could find a turbo off a 420i turbo and put it on with not too much fuss. I know all the other components like brakes/suspension are below par etc but just an idea at the mo.

Just buy a 420Gsi turbo perhaps instead?

Just swap the whole engine.. You can pick up a complete T16T engine from ebay for around £200 along with evetything you need. The engine loom is the same and so is the ECU.

You'd need all the boost piping, turbo oil feed and drain, water feed/drain etc etc..

N/A cars dont lend themselves well to turbocharging as is, some can cope with a light boosting but generally they have higher compression ratios than turbo engines, the turbo variants having lower compression to allow for the higher pressure from the turbo.

You end up with a double whammy of knock (pre ignition) caused by the increased cylinder pressures and the fact that generally N/A engines dont have internals designed to cope, forget rods, pistons and crank etc, so with anything other than a very low level of boost they tend to self destuct, I would imagine an ancient 2.0 T series Rover engine isnt perhaps going to be the strongest candidate, that said some people do supercharge and turbo N/A engines, the VW VR6 seems to end up with bolt on Charger kits and as far as I know doesnt get any special internals in most cases, also the E46 M3 ends up with some mega power figures but I guess both of these are a lot stronger internally than the Rover unit, even the turbo T series doesnt cope well with additional boost for very long.

So, as has been said, swap the engine for a turbo unit or even easier buy one !
