Opinions on a Golf 2.8 V6
Discussion
Last year I reluctantly decided to sell my faithful old motorcycle. I simply wasn't using it enough. I replaced it with a MKIV Golf 1.8T GTI, as a runabout for a bit of fun. Mrs colonel c (non driver) hate the thing, preferring to ride about in our Disco. Anyway I find myself hankering after a MKIV V6. It's probally going to cost me a grand or so to get one a little newer than my GTI. So my question is, will it be worth it or will I be disappointed.
I welcome the PH views and experiences.

I drove one after a GTI and wasnt as keen as I thought I would be, sure it was fast and refined but a bit too grown up, I expected a sort of GTI with more of what makes it a GTI, but they are a totally different character, but then that was a MK2 GTI versus a MK3 VR6, wasnt that I didnt like it, just wasnt what I was after.
Get your 1.8 T remapped.

I have one at the moment (hopefully not much longer) and they're not bad to be honest, a decent turn of speed and good for motorway driving, they do suffer from terrible understeer and aren't much cop when it comes to cornering but I don't think they were designed with this in mind. Engine sounds nice though!

Are we talking about the V6 4motion, not the R32?
I'd have thought a remapped 1.8t would be just as quick and better on fuel.

Warming to the remapping idea. I've not considered it before. Any ideas around costs and is insurance for a modified car likely to be more than a standard V6.

The V6 4Motion is more of a cruiser, than an out and out hot hatch. It's thirsty as well, without too many of the benefits. They're not that powerful. A FWD 1.8T with a bit of tuning would be as quick while also feeling lighter on its feet.
If you wanted 4WD with a V6, it has to be the R32.

What does she dislike about the 1.8T Golf that you think would change with a V6 4Motion? Or is that not the issue? How about a 325i Compact? No looker I know but I`d have one over a V6 4Motion Golf and I`ve owned 3 MkIV Golfs in the past.
I've got a MK4 R32 and my flatmate has just got a Mk4 V6 4motion. I absolutely love my car and i really do struggle to find a fault with it, except for the fuel costs! I've been in his 4motion a couple of times now and these things struck me: (for reference, his car isn't the cleanest and it only set him back £1500)
Decent turn of pace from the V6, not that much in it between the two. Much faster than the 1.8t i have been in.
Seems to understeer quite badly, this isn't something i expected as it's fairly difficult to get my R to understeer. This might be down to the less than quality tires on his 4mo. The R32 is far superior in the handling department.
The 4mo seems more of a motorway cruiser than a hot hatch. The R can be quite abrasive on the motorway, although i do have a full sports exhaust too.
The woodgrain interior is horrible, i'd be replacing that ASAP! Certainly seems like a whole lot of car for the money, i would consider it a decent choice.
