Hi guys,

I am going to get my drivers licence this year, and I was wondering how much would I have to pay to insure a car. I am 23 and I am looking to buy a mkI golf/fiesta for daily driving, also intending to convert it to a track day over time.

Per day? Or a misplaced decimal point?

Lots, sadly (being young and male).

It may be worth looking into a 'modern classic' policy on something like a mk2 Golf maybe? If - and it's a big if - they'll let a new driver take out a policy it will be miles cheaper than any mainstream company. My 5-litre TVR costs less to insure than a 1.6 Focus thanks to the wonders of specialist insurance and they'll accept just about anything vaguely old or unusual as a classic.

That's for the OP to work out. If he is confused then maybe he should compare the market with different insurers.

well i was thinking anything around 1000 would be fine since i'm not going to be spending too much on the car.

i was just trying to get a rough approximation for the costs of owning a car, including tax and servicing. how long does it take for the premium to drop significantly, assuming no claims ?

The best way to get an indication of costs is to try the online search engines. £1000 sounds optimistic, and I suspect messing with any car is going to hurt your premium a lot, but there are so many variables i.e. live in Mosside, expect to pay more than if you live in leafy suburbia and so on.

I got a quote on Confused.com yesterday, pretending I was a 17 year old that had just passed his test. Living in the 'burbs in an average/good postcode.

Cheapest quote on my £800 306 Dturbo was £4700 TPFT / £6500 Fully comp.

Jesus. It is a wonder there are any sub 20 year old drivers on the roads these days.

Does seem a lot, my brother pays about half that and is younger then you. I assume the cars you have been looking at are expensive to insure (or you live in Afghanistan). Might be worth trying a 1.0 Nissan Micra, they are about the cheapest to insure cars you can get. At least that'll tell you weather it's the car or you that is pushing the price up (if it's you there's not much you can do about it!). Track cars do not have to be insured, so it might actually be cheaper for you to get something cheaper for every day and an old E30 BMW 325i for track work, assuming you have space and can trailer it to events...

A Pass Plus does save you money for the first two years and would definitely be worth it.

If the E30 is driving sensibly, you shouldn't have an issue wink

Seems like a lot, 1k Max for a car like a micra at 23 should be more like 600 as you've still just passed your test

thanks guys, now i've got some rough numbers for the insurance bit.
i'm looking at about 3000 quid including tax and mot every year. Add another 200 for fixing bits and bobs associated with cars that are more than a decade old and it looks like i'll have to ask my girlfriend to chip in.

one more thing, do i have to declare the mods i do to the car right away? how about the fact that i'll be using it as a track car ?

Towing a trailer actually requires another test these days. Where I live crash for cash scams are so common place a lot of insurers won't quote at all, they don't want to know.

Yeah, I realised it was a bit of a non-starter as I wrote it. Never know though, OP could have a friend willing to help out in return for track time.

OP: I believe you do have to declare all mods, best off checking with the company though. Be aware that some (roll cages are bad, apparently) will push the cost up dramatically.

I don't see why you have to tell them you are using it on track, it's not covered so why should they care? I hope they don't anyway, I don't tell them mine sees track days...

Might be optimistic. Living in London, my Focus still costs me well over £400 a year and I'm 28 with ten years of driving experience. Ironically, the TVR is cheaper.
