Ive seen a number plate that I quite like. Its only 180 pounds. What other costs are involved in getting the plate swapped onto my car. My car is a 53plate if that makes any difference. And the new plate is the old style pre fix i think they call them.

Buy it from the DVLA. The price they quote is for everything apart from the actual plate to put on the car.

A friend was telling me the other day he has to pay £90 per year to maintain ownership of his plate... What an absolute ripoff this is from some dodgey third party company. Go direct with the DVLA or don't bother at all is the best advice I can give. If you do go elsewhere, make sure you read the small print!

Cost of getting the plate which can vary greatly depending on where you get it from and then there is the £80 DVLA transfer fee each time you change it or choose to retain it

Also should have added, it get's quite costly if you change your car often... I've spent the best part of £600 during the past few years purely in plate transfers.

Deffo not £90 a year to retain a plate as that retention is a one off fee

It's only a one of payment if you assign within a year, there is a £25 annual fee to keep it on tetention although they do give you options to retain for 2-3 years for a slightly higher payment.

You should also remember the initial payment of around £105 to put a plate on retention for a year includes the £80 assignment fee

And some ins. companies will now charge an admin fee when you 'update' them with the new number.

Some dealers out there charge you an admin fee to process a retention. I don't see the point....
