My girlfriend (Rivergirrl)just completed her CBT at Quickstart - Taplow near Slough (www.motorcycle-trainer.co.uk/). Nice thing about them is that all the cone work is off road, on their own closed circuit rather than in a car park as some instructors like to use. Starts at 9am, finishing around 3- 5pm with a final road test.

For other centres in your area plus general info try http://motorcycle-rider-training.co.uk/

BTW get yourself booked at Brands July 23rd for the pistonheads outing, you know it makes sense

sorry to hijack.

Just did the theory and passed it. 35 for multiply choice and 55 for HP.
Its all common sense. The only thing that i wasn't too sure on was the stopping distance which you might want to revise on. I had a lucky guess.

now i want to do my direct Access. I want to take the test only as that is all thats stopping me from getting a proper bike. If i book the test (£50 i think) do they supply the 500cc bike or will i have to hire one?

You will need to hire a bike from a school.

I would suggest you book a day with somebody like BSM. I did this for my test (as I had failed the 1st on a technicality)

have 2 hours of teaching, just to brush up on anything you may not be Ace on and then the test, includes the hire of the bike for the test.

Tim.

One good idea is just to hire a bike for a day- Brian Grays in High Wycombe rent out a 125cc (4 stroke) for £45 per day fully inc. Get one of these before your course and just ride everywhere...The more experience the better

I don't know what's more scary, the fact that you guessed at your stopping distances in your theory test and that you now want to talk your direct access. Or that you want to do your direct access in about a day and then hop on to a big bike.

I hope you have private medical insurance.

Might I be really boring and suggest a bit more time practising rather than rushing to get out on the road?

Just a thought. Better prepared than going 500 yards up the road after passing your test and not stopping in time for the back end of a bus.

Its not that i didn't know the stopping distance as i do, but i am crap at theory exams and i tend to forget figures. I think that what i wrote down came out the wrong way.
I passed my CBT in Oct 2003 and i have been riding everyday since then to and from London for work so thats about 8 months exp. I now feel its time to progress and get a proper bike.
Best price i've had is £20 for an hour lession and £175 for a half day (4hours riding on a 500) and then the test in the afternoon.

bloody hell

I paid about £100 for a couple fo hours lessons and then the test afterwards.

BTW

Just because you have been riding on a CBT to London for 8 months doesn't mean that you know enough to pass your test.

The CBt is just basic training, there is more stuff for be learnt to pass your test. Plus doing things like a turn in the road on a 500 is a different game than on a 125.

Yeah i'm still crap at turn's in the road and i passed my DAS 4 months ago.

two tips.

1. dont put your foot down when doing the turn in the road.
2. make sure if you feal your going to loose you balance put your foot down. And dont end up like me on my ass in the middle of the road with the rest of the students laughing at me.

I got it so instilled into my head not to put my foot down that when I lost the balance of the bike I ended up not putting my foot down atall and ended up makeing a right arse of myself.
