When you look around a typical urban scene in the UK, I would hazard a guess that the majority of new(ish) cars on the roads these days are diesels.

Of course there are still plenty of older cars that run on petrol, as well as (of course) cars that are more performance orientated.

But lets imagine things perhaps 7-10 years from now.

All of the petrol driven hatchbacks and family cars ( the petrol Mondeo, Vectra, little Nissans etc ) will have died a death and been scrapped. The diesel cars from the last 5 years or will be still be going strong in another 5 years however. And the overwhelming majority of new cars on the road are diesels.

Therefore, it is easy to imagine that the only users of petrol will be those people with performance and sports cars. And in the big scheme of things, the numbers of these cars is tiny compared to the number of regular diesel drivers.

So why should the oil companies provide pumps for a tiny fraction of the market?

Is it conceivable that some fuel stations could be 100% diesel? Could this mean that petrol users have to search for pumps, a bit like LPG users have to these days..?

Just a thought. Personally, I find the prospect chilling. I hate diesels , even though I own two of the damn things.

This thought occurred to me while queueing at the local Tesco fuel station. EVERY car there was a diesel.

New car stats have been running about 50/50 for a while. June's figures were:

91,323 newly registered diesel cars and 90,123 newly registered petrol.

You don't need to worry about petrol disappearing off the forecourts quite yet!

I think smaller petrol engines with turbos as well as hybrids have a better chance in the future than diesels.

Well, thank you. I am amazed the numbers are so even. I would not have guessed it. Take a look down the typical high street, it does not seem that way.

This.

Whilst Diesels give better MPG, it's hard to get the emissions down to the level required for Euro emissions testing.
