I have been told I have to "carbo-load" for an event. What is it and how do I do it?

Gooby, also make sure your drinks and snacks on the ride are balanced too, you don't want solely focused sugary stuff, keep them for when you are starting to get really drained, you want stuff that you take continually that will keep your energy/glycogen stores up for longer during aerobic activity. I used to use some foul tasting power called maxim diluted in water or squash when I was training 4-6hrs a day for swimming Although this was 16 years ago, I'm sure there's better stuff on the market nowadays

Depends on the event and your training/diet regime prior to the event.

You don't always need to carb-load prior and in many cases doing so for a few days prior can impede your progress not improve it.

South Downs Randone.

100 miles cross country, Saturday 30th July 2011. 2 days to go....

Training - bugger all!

There was a brave theory that once signed up, it would motivate me to train. Work stepped in and I have had no time to train. I now have a mad buddy who is expecting me to keep up with is eager attempts to motivate me to cycle further than 200 yards.......

100miles, no training?

I'd say forget carb loading completely pointless as it's the pain threshold and lack of legs being used to cycling that'll do you.

It's all quite hilly and not that fast paced on the assumption that with no training you're going ot be in the 13h category with seasoned guys taking about 10h iirc

Eat well, normal, nothing extraordinary, take plenty of fluids with you (Camelbak full plus 2 bottles), maltloaf sliced, buttered and in cling film (unless you like eating foil), couple of bananas, flapjack or two and maybe some chicken rolls or similar for a change from sweet stuff.

Don't try and race it or "keep up" as you will seriously do yourself some damage... take it easy at your pace and enjoy as best you can knowing you have plenty of food and drink on board to keep you doing.

And if you have seriously not had any saddle time as well ensure you have very padded shorts as you will absolutely not be sitting down for a couple of days afterwards having not desensitised yourself first!!

Is that for my arse or to use as a noose to strangle my buddy?

Carb loading's not going to help you much. I'd be getting a big bucket of SIS sports drink (other drinks are available, that's just the one I've used) and taking at least 500mls of that an hour. You can go a long way if you keep fuelled and hydrated.

Cheers,

FT.

A lesson learned by me on the South Downs - don't take too much water, there are regular (should be clearly indicated in an organised ride) water points where you can fill up a litre bottle to last you to the next stop. I went with a 3 litre camelback and 2x 750cl water bottles. I really didn't need the camelback or the other bottle and all the water turned into 4 kg extra weight I didn't really need.

I tok a mixture of cooked pasta, energy bars, mars bars, bananas and some powder. This lasted me.

I had done a lot of training but still took over 13 hours, so good luck to you! I think the supported riders seemed to do it quite easily as they had a mate or someone with a van which met them at regular points with supplies etc, and I'm sure they'd pick you up if you'ev had enough!

As a side note I'd love to do this and give it a damn good go... reckon it'd be brilliant fun as a team smile

Take your time and enjoy the views, hopefully won't be too hot. You might want to think about one of these.
