Some may think its a bit early for a wintrer tyre thread but bear with me on this one,I've been keeping a keen eye on the price of winter tyres from places such as My Tyres and other online retailers.

After experiencing winter tyres last year I'm a convert and they paid for themselves getting me to work throughout December last year. This year I have a different car and the 15" tyres I had on last years steed will not fit my Volvo, so I've bit the bullet and bought a set in 16". They are Kumho Izen KW23 which is what I had last year so I thought stick with what I know as I was very pleased with the last set.

In the last 7 days they have gone up from £70.60 to £75.80 and although My Tyres are a German company I'm fairly sure such an increase isn't purely down to the exchange rate.
Last year I bought the same tyre but in 15" format for £48 and that was much later, in October, this year the same tyre is already £52.

Just a word of warning if you are thinking of getting some, get them asap or you'll be paying a premium as demand increases!

Ordered mine monday, they arrived today (thurs), not bad to say they came from Germany.

I'd been told that tyre prices have jumped massively in the last year or so, but it doesn't surprise me to see that companies are already getting set to profiteer off people for winter tyres already.

I wonder if other countries in Europe who have traditionally steadfast buyers of these tyres and not "newcomers" like so many Brits in the last few years are experiencing similar price hikes, or whether it's just the Brits being shafted..

Yup, am seeing the same thing. I reckon retailers are artificially keeping the prices high because stock isn't so widely available yet.

Also depends where the tyre is manufactured. GBP has gone down the toilet against Asian currencies ~ 8-10% vs JPY over the past year

So based on the figures quoted here the price increase is well above the so-called rate of inflation. Never ceases to amaze me....

Yep, one of the main reasons plus the raw material costs have increased. Most tyres are imported hence price rises.

Slow growth etc - perhaps something should be done about the relentless rise in insurance, energy prices etc, etc... mad
Oh, a Daily Soovy reader.... the real answer's above.
Those of us who have to use winter tyres every winter and pay in € have also been affected by the price increases.

My OP was more to highlight the £5 increase over the last week, I looked at the mytyres website in German and the prices are pretty similar.

I've been checking mytyres every few days and for instance, Nankang Snow SV-2 in 235/45R17 has been priced at:

12/9: £84.30
15/9: £80.40
19/9: £80.80
21/9: £85

Hard to guess where these prices will go...

I put Nokian W+'s on my wife's Saab 9-5 in November last year. I paid £85 each from Mytyres and although they aren't offering the W+ anymore, similar D3's are £131. The Nokian WRG2's on my Passat have gone from £120 each, again bought last November, to £190 today and it's still only September. Scary. If we do end up having another cold and snowy winter I hate to think what the prices will be like next year.

Kumho Izen KW23 in 205/55 R16

1/9 : £70.50
8/9 : £76.60
15/9 : £72.60
21/9 : £65.40 (special offer)

Bugger! I paid about £72 each for mine if I'd waited I could have saved nearly £20, the prices really do seem a bit unpredictable.

You can't claim "rip off britain" when comparing prices from a German company... Delticom behind mytyres run variable pricing depending on supplier availability and stock levels.

Winter tyre prices, like all tyre prices have been increasing directly from the manufacturers meaning when new stock goes on sale, the prices have been going up. This of course needs to be passed on to the public.

With winter stock being so hard to come by, I would imagine some UK retailers who have managed to secure key stock have put up prices, but with margins in tyres being as low as a few pound a tyre can you blame them for trying to make an extra fiver if they've gone to the effort of taking the risk of securing stock, potentially month in advance?
