First bump I've had in 15 years so would appreciate some advice!

Stopped in a one-way street today to allow an LGV to reverse into a side-street. The van following me wasn't concentrating and ran into my back bumper at about 10mph. We both jump out and the other driver apologises, admits liability, we swap details and go on our way. My car has a crunched and scuffed bumper and a small crease in the boot lid. Both vehicles completely driveable and no injuries.

I get home and report the incident and it turns out the other party and I share the same insurer, They tell me they are booking my car in for repair and that if the other party admits liability, I won't have to pay my excess.

Will it make any difference with us sharing an insurer - are they likely to go 50/50 whatever happens? I don't really fancy paying my excess when I was the victim, so would there be any advantage in involving an accident management company?

When it happened to me many many years ago I had to go to a third party to recover.

I'd wait to see if the other guy admits liability. If he doesn't, definitely consider going to someone else to claim.

Get on and get it fixed. Doesn't sound like liability will be a problem.

Get an accident management company involved ASAP,
That way we will all benefit from higher premiums next year to pay their fees

You reckon?

What are the odds said bloke has a change of heart when it comes to speaking to his insurers? Happened to me years ago - I still 'won' in the end but it took a bloody year to sort out (was only TPF&T so had to get the accident recovery co. involved, who were useless).

Hi caulkhead......

Did that hapoen on the island then? If the damage was minor i would have been tempted to avoid insurance and just fix privately. Your premiums will now go up despite the accident not being your fault.......

Hindsight a wondeful thing and all that.......

It is gutting when it happens. Sounds like the van driver is reasonable so should end happily.

Best of luck

We had this a few years back, the other side changed their mind on what happened and we got screwed. You can't bring your legal protection in to play as they can't sue themselves. What ever happens the insurer will pay the same amount out regardless.

Fairly low chance for a hit in rear crash like this.

Call your insurance get them to to fix it with one of their approved body shops, get a courtesy car if needs be. If you haven't reported it to the Police do so as soon as possible so you have an incident number. If the driver changes his/her story use the incident number to make a formal complait the driver was driving without due care and attention. That way there will be no argument that the colision was 100% his fault and his insurance will have to pay out.
