OK,

I have one week in Phuket in December, I want to go somewhere else for my second week - I have already been to Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Railay Beach, Krabi and Lagkawi.

What I am after is somewhere which is either no more than 4 hours by boat from Phuket, or 2 hours flying time max from Phuket. Ideally I want to find a place that is not populated with the ghastly modern hotels, I am looking for more traditional accommodation (beach huts or similar) if possible where I am staying more or less on the beach. Ideally the place will not be full of fat Russians!

Hopefully I might find a place with a chilled beach vibe and plenty of relaxed drinking with like minded traveller.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Ok go to Krabbie and travel South East by taxi, it is like going back in time, it gets less crowded each KM you go from Krabbie toward Traang, there are loads of beaches on the south side of the road, but about 75 KM from Krabbie you can turn right of the road to Sakao and beyond this is a place called Pak Meng, and Yo Yo beach, there is nothing here (like raliey 30 years ago) Pak Meng 'resort' is OK cafe and nice beach huts, Yo Yo is a great beach obe muslim place to eat and straw huts on the beach, you either need your own cr or get the taxi to come back for you.

Trang is an idustrial dump,

There is nothing in these places, just beach and local eating places, push bike hire etc, reguler stop for me I was there a few weeks ago, I've never seen another European there.

Koh Rong in Cambodia?
I'm heading there next year for exactly the things you're looking for.

Sounds interesting, I did drive down that way on my way to Satun I think it was to get the ferry over to Langkawi, might be a bit too far to travel though, but will investigate further for sure! Thanks

Is there an easy way to get there from Phuket?

Yeah, this has been recommended by a few people, however it is 5hours from Koh Samui and I will still have to get there from Phuket making it a bit further than I wanted to travel.

But thanks, keep the ideas coming...

It's just over 2 hours from Samui, not 5.
Take a look at Khao Lak, you might find something.

Lonely Planet says 5 hours for the express boat or 7-8 hours for the night boat!

No it's not. It's 2 hours by fast boat, or 3.5 by the slow one ( SeaTran was the slow one last time I was there ).

Koh Samui is a 40min flight from Phuket, so if you get the timing right, you can be drinking on Koh Tao a few hours after you leave Phuket.

Id second the Koh Tao suggestion, not been for a few years now but was relatively unspoilt and chilled out last time I was there.

Id also recommend the north and / or east of Koh Pangnan, as long as your out of Haad Rin and Thong Sala (where the ferry port is) theres some beautiful and again pretty quiet beaches. We stayed in a place called Seethanu while backpacking last year and would definetly head back, there was a great little bar called heaven on the beach that did brilliant food and was a top place to watch the sun go down.
