Galloper!

I doubt many people have heard of this car in the UK, it never sold well in Europe and wasn't made in RHD as far as I know. It's a 1999 model but couldn't be more 80s if it was hit with a Citroen BX.

You may recognise some of the lines though, the windows, the general shape...however this isn't some cheap Chinese copy, this is a fully Mitsubishi authorised Hyundai Galloper II Exceed (what a name!). A Korean built Pajero (aka Shogun) mk1, complete with throaty 3 litre V6 and all the right manly levers to control gears, ratios, driven wheels and hopefully some type of ejector seat. The only concessions to the modern driving experience are the AC and Vitara-esque style bar on the front (although luckily for my ego it's only masquerading as a style bar, it's pretty solid!). A highlight for me is the jump seats in the boot which look like they're from the back of a DC3.

You may wonder why I bought one of these if I could have had my pick of proper desert warriors (Landcruiser etc)...

The truth is that Landcruisers are more expensive than cars half their age and mileage, and this Galloper was pretty cheap, and in immaculate condition considering its age and mileage (175k km!). And the fact that the day before I found this I spent hours trawling the car souks (markets) for a V8 Yank tank for similar money and came away wondering if the sellers were mad. £3k equivalent for a '97 Crown Vic with starship mileage (270k km!) and the engine light shining brightly from the dash. Add to this the '00 Towncar with an oil leak and ruined interior, the '01 Crown Vic with such a bad respray it must have been repaired in the dark and a whole load of other overpriced heaps of junk. The only redeeming factor is that rust is not an issue.

I've yet to properly drive the thing but look forward to the first desert outing!

The tissues are not mine...honest.

For the desert I would fit a set of Yokohama A/T's or Dunlop Grandtec's and ditch the bull bar.

They seem to have a fairly good reputation. With about 16 years of continuous manufacture by the time this was built I would hope some of the issues would have been ironed out (possibly being a bit naive there!).

I shall bear this in mind...although for the time being road tyres and a large barrier (aka nudge bar) between me and other road users at the front are probably better for the notorious roads here biggrin

Just back from Barcelona, seen a few of these about and had wondered. Spotted the Shogun influence, but hadn't twigged much beyond that.

Well it seems they are / were popular in Europe, just not our RHD corner of it!

Incidentally I discovered the Pajero/shogun was called something else in Spain as Pajero means w****r in Spanish!

Now sold...but thought I'd share a few desert shots showing the true purpose of an old shed like this. Performend pretty damn well in the softer stuff, the only issue being overheating after a Paris-Dakar style run to get back to the road (we were 10 yards away but it was blocked by rocks for many kms so we had to hammer it through the sand to avoid getting stuck and make it to a break in the rocks. All part of the adventure!
