I have not been out of university for all that long, and in the past I’ve worked in regular 1st/2nd IT support.

I now work for a different company in a slightly the specialised area of global communications, it definitely looks good on the CV because I have got much more responsibility and I deal with a lot of interesting gear.

However I now want to leave for various reasons but none related to my actual job role, infact I'm quite desperate to find a new place of work.

There are no similar jobs in my area except a few regular 1st Line IT jobs although admittedly they do not pay any less. Would it look bad on my CV if I went from a specialised part of support, back down the ladder?

Only you can decide what you want. Why are you leaving your existing role? Too much pressure? Too many hours? Don't get on with colleagues?

You'll likely regret going down the ladder - isn't there any way you can move sideways into an alternative role instead? 1st line support really is the first step for many, so I don't get why you'd ever want to go back into it (it's picking up the phones answering the same questions over and over again) - what about 3rd line support? Networks? Development? Comms?

In the past I moved companies for more money from a lower level job. It was a mistake. I ended up with a boss with less experience and a higher ambition than me, who treated me like a tt.

In the past I walked away from a job at a high level, becuase the stress and the travel were silly, and that wasn't a mistake, because I retained my sanity and ended up with a boss that I liked, doing a job that I loved.

I can explain things on my CV, and explain the rational for the decision, and explain why in heinsight it was the right or wrong thing to do.

Young manager has got one of his junior staff "in trouble" and needs to leave sharpish perhaps?!

As above, I would not want to step back in my role, but there are can be roles out there which might look a step down on paper but pay & benefits & opportunities are better, or they suit you personally (less commuting time/costs are in an industry you really want to work in etc). As you are quite early on in your career, it probably won't matter too much and you can talk around it fairly easily, and justify things like saying you are a high achiever and want to get lots of industry knowledge and experience!
