Anyone else heard from the taxman yet?
Discussion
After the recent stories in the news about millions of people having been either under or over-taxed, has anyone heard from the Inland Revenue to tell them they're in one camp or the other?
My wife received a refund cheque today, for £783.
The last tax year in which she actually worked was 2007/8.
How the fk can they over-tax her to the tune of something like 45%, and then take 4 bloody years to realise????

how can you be overtaxed 45% and not realise straight away!
Combination of maternity pay, pro-rated part time and various other factors to do with sprogging. I accept that her tax situation would've been pretty complicated, but surely that's what the tax office is there for?Kermit power said:

The main beef anyone would have about these PAYE Coding issues is that due to massive reductions in staff and the two year delay in implementing a new PAYE reconciliation computer system, two to three years of PAYE records were not tied up until October 2010. This tying up process is still ongoing and tax under and overpayments are being revealed each time they perform a fresh reconciliation run.
In other words, the system is now working better than it was, but that is little consolation for those who thought that they had been paying correct tax when they had not.

Why would they ask an employee for details of an employer?
My post was unintentionally vague, they asked for a P45 Part 1A (or similar to that) from when I allegedly worked there in 2009. Thing is, I have never worked for that company (PRB Tracing Services) and as far as Google is concerned they dissolved in 1997.
The reason quoted for their request was to ensure I am on the right tax code. I have no idea how they have got this so wrong and my real name is quite unique so its unlikely they have muddled me with someone else of the same name...

Apparently I owe the taxman a total of £3k from the year 2007 to 2009, when I was PAYE. Not sure how that works.
I've challenged it and I await their response.
Check your Detailed Tax Coding notices for the relevant years.I've challenged it and I await their response.
Once you review these in conjunction with your P60s the reasons behind these errors is ususally pretty obvious.
It looks like you need to review tax years -
2006/07
2007/08
2008/09

£1200 for me and 2008/9.
It paid for my new floor. I never even saw the cheque, my wife told me it had arrived, banked it and bought the flooring before I even got home!
