Hi guys,

I've had my Peugeot 207 for almost 3 years, it's an 07 plate and has been serviced regularly. In September I was driving to a derby game and the gears literally stopped working - I had to force it into each gear and eventually it would only go into neutral, no gears at all (although 3rd would work at a push). Got towed away, the garage greased the linkages and the car was fine again until last week when it happened again.

This time got it towed to the only Peugeot garage in the area (miles away from anywhere!) and they are telling me, after a week and a half of farting around and not diagnosing the problem, that it needs a new clutch assembly and new gear linkages.

Now the linkages I understand as it was them that were greased and temporarily fixed the problem back in September. But I'm loathe to pay £700 to get a new clutch on a car with 50,000miles on the clock and which was serviced (by a non-Peugeot garage) 3 days before it broke down in September.

Peugeot are also trying to say that the warranty ran out on 14th October and that if I'd taken it to them when it happened in September (which I couldn't because it was a bank holiday and the only garage willing to recover it and look at it was the little one I took it to) then it might have been different and it *may* have been covered by warranty. But that, despite the problem starting 2 months ago, it's out of warranty and they're not paying anyhting.

First up, does anyone know if this sounds like a clutch or just linkage problem? Also, anyone know where I stand warranty wise? And finally, anyone got any suggestions for what car to get next, cos I sure as sh*t am not getting another Peugeot after this...

Does it have hydraulic clutch? My gti does and the master / slave cylinder could have gone , £250 for both and fitting. Not sure your symptoms match this but could cause trouble selecting gear and pack up all together.

Peugeot are notorious for going for the most expensive fix in the hope of curing problem and are rarely right.

Well obviously anything french is pure dung, but anyway.

It's simple. You say you had to force it into gear...but dont say when ? That is rather important.

If it will go into gear relatively easily with the engine off, then chances are the gearbox isnt so bad.
If it wont, then chances are it's not so good.

Engine running is a very different scenario as the clutch also plays a part.

Engine on or off made no difference, gears were just as bad either way.

My mum ended up phoing them to have a go at them for taking 2 weeks (I have no time to be chasing them up from work) and ended up speaking to a guy who was "so nice he sounded like he knew what he was talking about" and giving them the go ahead to replace the clutch and she's paid for it. I'm furious with her as I really wanted a second opinion before anyone shelled out for that...

I have the same problem on my peugot 207s 1.4 petrol hatchback 07 reg. It has been good to me since I had it back in 2009, but now suddenly during a drive I had trouble getting it into and out of gear. (Any). Managed to limp home. Diagnosis is I can get it into any gear with the engine switched off and clutch depressed. When engine is started slghtly releasing the clutch the car will move, but unable to get it out of gear unless I switch engine off. According to what I am reading it is not a gear box problem, but a linkage one. Do you agree and if so what would the cost for a garage to fix it be?
Also I had the car fully serviced 2 weeks ago. Should any of the gearbox / linkage have been checked on the service?

Thanks in anticipation of your reply
