Image editing on a mac, but i can't afford photoshop.

Im looking for a cheap image editor, or even a free one.

I have been using seashore, but everything takes such a long time. And things like "darken" or "colour burn" don't exist.

I had GIMP on my last computer, but its a rigmarole to get it on a mac.

What do you guys use?

It's a very capable program.

having come from using photoshop i found pixelmator difficult to use. the palettes were wrong and i couldn't work out how to do anything.

photoshop elements is £55 from the mac app store.

aperture is £55 from the app store.

i find i use aperture to sift through a shoots RAW files and do some general editing. if there's cloning or anything more difficult, then i'll open the image in photoshop elements.

i have installed gimp on the mac but found it truly awful to use.

I use GIMP on Lion, it starts automatically under X11, a little slow but other than that I find it fine. Failing that I suppose you could "acquire" a copy of Photoshop..

Indeed. You could "acquire" it by going on Adobe's web site, or the Mac App Store, and "paying" for it.

To do otherwise would be a bit "3.14 quay", don't you think?

iPhoto 2011 has a reasonable selection of editing stuff, such as cropping, white balance, red eye etc, and comes free with a new machine.
AFAIK it's under a tenner to download the app if you have an older version
