my brother has a 1.4 corsa which he uses as his family car and his normal journeys about 5 miles each journey.

buying and maintaining wont be an issue but was wondering will the mpg be ALOT less than the corsa in a 530d? hes a gentle driver as he almost always has his kids in the car with him.

Don't really notice poor mpg if you only do a small number of short journeys. That's my excuse for staying 'diesel free' anyway. By that logic he might as well get the petrol version.

Is a e39 330d different to a e39 330d m sport on local journeys?

My E39 528 does 22 mpg around town, but I walk to more places now. I expect the 530d will do 26-28. But if it's around town what does it matter? Still cheaper than getting a bus!

If it's an auto 530d, there will be tears if you have high expectations. Around town, they are frankly not great for a Diesel. However, for the size of the car/engine/autobox combo - not baad tbh. Just depends on what your/his expectations are. Manual will typically be around 5/10mpg better.

If it's for short journeys, buy one with the proper engine.

Short journeys will not let the diesel shine. He'll kick himself over compromising on exciting power delivery whilst not getting the mpg returns of a properly warmed diesel engine.

The diesel might even be more expensive, as they tend to suffer when they're run without a good warm up (DPF issues, for exmaple).

Wouldn't have thought an E39 would have a DPF... Certainly an issue on newer diesels though.

I'd get a petrol - running costs won't be much different and it'll be cheaper to buy.

Can I be really pedantic? It's just a Sport, not an M-Sport.

Forgive me, I was being quite general about the problems diesels suffer 'round the doors'!

As above, the e39 530d's do not have a DPF. The are quite cheap to buy now, not far off petrol bmw equivs.

Makes no sense buying a 530d for that sort journey. All the extra issues and potential costs. Get a Petrol instead.
