Just thought I would post a warning to other owners after what happened to my ForTwo this evening.

Just before I arrived home I started to notice a faint smell of burning oil. I thought nothing of it as I was following an old transit so assumed it was coming from that.

Only when I parked up and got out did I realise it was coming from my car. The small amount of white smoke from the area of the exhaust was a clue as well by that point!

Fearing the worst I stuck my head under the rear and could see oil dripping from the oil filter. Assuming it had maybe worked loose, although it had been on for around a year so pretty unlikely, I tried to tighten it but to no avail. It was at this point that it became clear that it had a small split around the join between the top and the bowl where it had corroded which was letting out oil.

Whislt I admit the car was slightly overdue a service, the filter had only been on for about 13 months so its not as if it was that old.

If you have a ForTwo with the Mitsi 1.0 engine can I suggest you check your oil filter for corrosion around this lip before someone loses an engine. The split in mine was pretty much facing the front of the car.
