1 series or Scirocco

BMW is a nice place to sit (albeit I have only been in the old one) however the Scirocco is meant to be a good car too, only hampered by poor rear visibility and rear seat space (it's also just an expensive Golf)
BMW is more 'PH'. However if it's a new one - which I suspect it is - they are pig-ugly cars so get one only in black with the sports package.

Is it a new shape 5 door 1 series or the old shape 3 door?
New 1er had a much nicer interior I thought when I looked at them recently.
Guy in here has a Scirocco company car which I borrowed recently, nice car and pretty roomy for what it is (albeit with only 2 seats in the back and restricted boot access - the boot itself is good sized though). Dynamically though it didn't feel as sporty as it looked; not driven a 1er yet.
Scirocco is probably the choice if you want it to look good though.

A lot of the points raised are still valid.
I have the Scirocco - it has been utterly reliable for the last two years and looks (to me) prettier than the Beemer. However, on balance, if I was choosing between the two now I would personally go for the Beemer.

I own a 1 series, albeit a 130, but in your situation I would go for the Scirocco.
I really don't like the looks of the new 1 series and, having driven the 170bhp TDI version of the 'roc, it was a very good car, and certainly, for road driving and commuting, perfectly adequate.
I don't know how they compare in terms of tax, but assuming all things are equal, despite the 1 series being a decent steer, for 90% of the time you wouldn't notice much difference to the fwd Scirocco. That is looks much better is a plus point, and you also won't be one of thousands of other company car drivers plodding along in your diesel 1 series.

Getting very divided opinions here....
Not making it an easier decision.
After doing some research the interior on the Scirocco looks like a nice place to be and the from the outside doesn't hurt your eyes!
The BMW seems to be a let down in all these areas, but maybe makes up for it with the RWD. But the 1.8Diesel engine doesn't make me think that I'm going to notice it much, until snows and I cant get off my drive!
