I'm in the market for a pick up truck and have seen a 75k 2007 Ford Ranger Wildtrak 3.0 local to me which seems to meet my needs and is fairly competitively priced (£8k plus VAT).

Does anyone here have one and can give me an idea of things to look out for? I know running costs will be relatively high, but any real world experience?

Any other alternatives for £10k (inc VAT)? Contract Hire on a new truck works out at about £10k so may be an option, but would prefer to try and find something second hand that hasn't been abused.

  • Must be proper 4x4 (decent ground clearance) as it will go off road
  • Must have boot space no less than my A6 Avant (and preferably bigger) due to dogs + baby gear
  • Preferably LCV as will be run against my business so a truck is more tax efficient than a car (especially a 4x4)
  • Must be reasonably reliable and hard wearing - don't have time or expertise to work the spanners
  • Leather and toys appreciated - I don't really want base spec.

I don't know how it will affect prices but will the launch of the new Ranger not push second hand prices down slightly in the not too distant future.

12 month lead time at the moment (according to my cousin who works at Ford) so I doubt it will be anytime soon. Thing is I could do with a change in the next month or so, so waiting for a new model to come out will be just like it is with iPhones ;-)

I had a 2004 Ranger for a year or so and it felt solid and unbreakable. Not as many toys perhaps as the more fashionable Nissan & Toyota offerings but a good honest workhorse which lugged all manner of kit & crap around for me. It's a re-badged Mazda (B-series??) - or at least, the 2004 model was.

New model has already come out, was available to buy from last year and there are vehicles with customers. There is a wait for Wildtrack the Wildtrack model but it isn't that long, and most of the other models will be floating around with dealers in one spec or another.

Although I suppose if the new model is already out it would have had/be having an affect on second hand prices therefore they would be available slightly cheaper already.
