I'm thinking about taking the kids to the seaside this weekend. I appreciate the weather won't be great but at least it'll be better than staying in Northampton!

Given the aforementioned Northampton location the east coast seems the logical choice. The thing is, I don't know it very well at all. Where's good to go? I'm not at all interested in the traditional British seaside experience (namely amusement arcades, donkey rides, knotted handkerchiefs etc), so somewhere relatively quiet but with a nice chippy for lunch would be great. We won't be getting in the water so ideally a decent sandy beach for sandcastles would be good.

Has anyone got any recommendations?

Aldeburgh and Thorpeness in Suffolk - straight across the A14 to Stowmarket then onto the B roads for a few miles.

Not sandy beaches, but a million miles from the likes of Southend, Blackpool, etc. A really pretty, historic and warm place.

Aldeburgh is home to two of the most famous chippies in the country, and is a beautiful, picturesque seaside town with lots of small, independent, shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. It's quite upmarket, certainly no chavs driving up and down -you will more likely see some very nice cars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldeburgh

A mile along the beach (fab walk) is Thorpeness which is a lovely little place also - with a very pretty boating lake (at 2 foot deep it's also very safe for kids) and the house in the clouds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorpeness

It's a lovely part of the world, very friendly, very laid back. We've been looking for a weekend bolt-hole for a while now, but London+ prices are testing my patience!

Try it and see, I know it's popular with a few other PHers and is the destination for the annual Fish'n'Chip run for the East Anglia lot.

We're off to Wells next Sea on the top of the East Anglian 'bump'.....miles and miles of sandy beaches and dunes around Holkham.

Wells harbour has a couple of great fish n chip shops as well as being able to go crabbing off the harbour wall.

If beach gets too cold then a 5 minute drive up to Holkham Hall for a luxury Hot Chocolate and scone is fantastic.

Wherever you go enjoy it...

Thanks for the suggests chaps. I'll have a look at these with the wife and see what suits. Depending on how long we stay, we may be able to cover off a few of them.

I quite like the idea of Cromer. Having read quite a lot of books about the RNLI and hearing about the legendary Henry Blogg, I'm quite keen to visit the museum there. Any idea what the rest of the place is like?

Wells-on-sea is nice enough, but not as nice as Aldeburgh and Thorpness.

However, as a stand alone beach, Holkham is lovely, but you need good weather to enjoy a beach with little else other than a beach and sea.

Aldeburgh has the chippies, some nice boutique type shops (couple of highstreet ones too).

Thorpeness also has the meare, so you can hire a rowing boat, something nice and different?

Also, nearby is Snape Maltings, always worth a wander round (upmarket craft type place).
