I'm looking at a roadtrip to Germany later this year and planning on staying in Stuttgart & Munich to visit the various car museums in the area.

I'm travelling from London and have a vague plan to stop off about half-way in (eg.) Luxemburg so would look to do about 300 miles driving each day.

Can anyone recommend any reasonable hotels in these areas ( up to about £100/120 per night) with safe parking - Luxemburg/French border overnight and then Munich & Stuttgart with the hotels being easy to get to? I'm not very used to driving on the wrong side of the road so I would probably not want to be too central in these cities unless they are easy to get to. I'd probably leave the car in the hotel while i'm there and just get public transport around the cities.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Why not drive a bit further east and stay near the Nurburgring (Frankfurt), especially if you can pick a day something interesting is going on.

(driving in Europe is probably easier than the UK, as lane discipline and other driver's awareness is way better... )

When I went to Stuttgart the first time I stayed in the Golden Leaf hotel, it's not particularly amazing but it was cheap and had secure parking (though I just ended up parking on the street- loads of room and safe overnight) it's also just 'round the corner from the Porsche museum. I went mainly for the Mercedes museum and it was about a 15 minute drive from the hotel. In Stuttgart you're supposed to have an 'environmental zone' sticker for your car, or it's a 40euro fine if they catch you, my car being an old diesel doesn't qualify and I was fine both times I've been in Stuttgart without one.

German cities, like here aren't much fun to drive around but I found driving on the right easy to adjust to, they have a lot of forward facing speed cameras though, and they're painted grey not yellow like ours. I took the S-bahn a couple of times when I was in Stuttgart last time, it was ok but quite long intervals between trains and fairly expensive.

If you like classics I highly recommend the Sinsheim Technik museum too, it's on the way to Stuttgart just off the autobahn, it has a really good collection of cars.

Nurburgring is 180km from Frankfurt, so no where near it. Nearest big city is Koblenz, 60km away, Bonn 60km or Cologne 80km away.

If you are lucky with traffic then the ring is only an hour and 10 minutes from Frankfurt!

Maybe Baden-Baden? Try Der kleine Prinz, Belle Epoque or Brenner's.

Cologne is a fairly easy trip from London in a day - if you get the ferry to Dunkirk it saves a bit of driving in France.

-edit-

As for hotels, any of the big chains are perfectly good and about right price wise. A safe but boring choice.

Melia Hotel Luxembourg. Almost brand new, very comfortable and less than £100 a night. Only downside is no wifi in the rooms. Luxembourg is a very pleasant little city and an easy stop off en route to Germany.
