Not sure if this comes under health or sport but anyway.

I've been going back to the gym for the last 3 months after a year or so's layoff. For the last 6 weeks I've been doing the following:

2 days cardio - 15 mins interval running/walking, 15 mins bike, 15 mins crosstrainer followed by some crunches and free weights (bicep/tricep/lat)

2 days personal training which focuses on kickboxing/boxing with some weights or circuit thrown in.

I also try and do pilates one day a week as it helps my back and general flexibility.

The problem I have is that pretty much every day, my lower back and legs are so stiff and achey in the mornings, I feel like an OAP. I'm also finding that my knees are stiff, especially climbing stairs. I am doing stretching after all the workouts and have started using powerplate too.

Any suggestions? While my fitness has got a lot better and I'm enjoying the workouts (they're hard but not unmanageable) this constant acheyness is really annoying.

As a side note, my job is desk-based though I've had a workstation assessment. The only other thing I can think of is the fact that my feet over-pronate pretty severely and I wondered if that was putting strain on my knees/back. My trainers were bought to cope with this but normal day shoes aren't.

FFS. I obviously meant 'aching' rather than 'acing'.

Hi ho Silver..sorry

As a matter of interest how old are you ?

And do you have a pre-workout refuel eg I have 2 muesli bars and a banana which seems to avoid the after effects from even the heftiest workout, I also eat a wacking big portion of tuna past and tomatoe within 60 mins of gym session

Works for me. smile

Have you considered barefoot running and maybe barefoot-stylee footwear for the office?

You may find weight training will build up muscles that may have had little use in years; maybe just incorporate some lunges, squats and a little something to stretch your hams, maybe deads? Doesn't need to be heavy, just get them moving against resistance.

Maybe change one of your kickboxing sessions into a weights session aimed at strengtheing your back/improving it's mobility and also working on your core? What you are doign will be doign that anyway but you'll find good cor stability will make you a better kickboxer.

I'd also look at changing one of your cardio sessions to something like rowing or swmimiing which are both low impact and are a very good workout. You don't see many people doing rowing because 20 mins rowing is bd hard at a half decent pace..........

Sometimes you need to rest. Depends on the individual but resting every other day might be what you need. It's a good ache, though, right?

Edit: I cycle most days for cardio purposes so my legs are always aching to some degree. *shrug*

Well, no. It's not a good ache. And it's been pretty persistent right from building up to two gyms per week to four. I thought it would ease off once I started to get fitter and more flexible but it doesn't seem to have.

Re. taking out one of my boxing sessions, that's on the cards. I've been doing two personal training sessions per week but from July I'm putting that back to one and moving to classes or circuit sessions instead so I'll see how it goes.

FWIW, for about 10 years I gymmed at least 4 times a week and as very fit but a change of job a couple of years ago screwed up my programme somewhat.
