All,

I have just booked a Hertz Camaro SS for an East Coast Road trip next month (not my first choice but was the only muscle car they could do for the time, and I have had a Mustang over there before), and I have a few queries that Google has this far been unable to answer conclusively.

This is a most un-pistonheads question in relation to a 400BHP car but has anyone hired one before and can tell me if there is a way to plug in an Android phone (i.e. USB in) so I can cue up some classic road trip songs? There appears to have been at least an option (according to searches) but not sure if it is on the Hertz cars.

In a slightly more pistonheads vein is the traction control switchable? The Mustang I had last time (couple of years ago) had the TC switch plastic welded so it could not be switched off (before it was "accidentally" knocked free!).

Also if anyone has any particularly good recommendations for driving roads near NY/Washington/Boston they would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I had one for a week in California recently. I'm pretty sure there was a USB socket to plug your phone into. Personally, I love listening to U.S radio stations as it adds to the whole American experience thing.

The traction control is switchable. You push the button briefly to turn it off a bit or hold it down for a few seconds to turn it off completely. However, the SS with auto transmission isn't really powerful enough to do a burnout from standstill and the diff. on the one I had seemed to be fairly open, so you may not have much low-speed fun with the TC off unless it's wet.

All in all a fun car to drive though and much better than I thought it would be.

Hi,
Do you know what the cost difference was compared to the Corvette? I am going to LA and they don't have the SS price listed from LAX.
The Corvette is plan A but we may need a bit more luggage space than it can provide and I don't think the O/H is too keen to have a suitcase on her lap so the SS may be the sensible option.

Thanks

It might be worth spending a couple of quid on a Male -> Male headphone cable. This has been the easiest way to connect an iPod in the last couple of hire cars I had...

Camaro sounds fun. I've got 5 adults and 2,500 miles in a Suburban XL next month. smile

Thanks for the info.

I agree that local radio stations certainly add some colour to the trip! It has that Sirius radio so should be lots of choice. Just want the option of winding my mate up with the song from Convoy and some music from Smokey and the Bandit (bit of a running joke).

Will take USB and male/male audio jack to be on the safe side!

I was a bit disappointed to read the SS auto is down on power compared to the manual but oh well. I was googling the SS and was surprised to read one mag mention the handling was not as bad as you would think and that it actually has the same 'ring time as my current steed (E46 M3). Should be interesting. My mate is slightly worried as he doesn't drive very often and the most powerful thing he has driven is probably a transit. I think I may do most of the driving!

The handling is surprisingly good for a yank tank. I've owned a couple of early Camaros, which is why I wanted to try the new one rather than a Corvette or Dodge (and the 'Vette was quite a bit more money from memory).

The Sirius radio was a bit of a disappointment. I thought you could get a lot of UK digital stations through Sirius, but apart from a couple of BBC stations it was mainly minority stuff, so I stuck to good old FM.

I wouldn't worry too much about your friend driving it. Unless he's got a really heavy foot or it's wet and slippery, it's much the same as any other car.

One other thing, was that when I looked at pictures of the Camaro before going, the trunk looked very small and I couldn't find dimensions anywhere on the web. When we got there, it was no problem though. The trunk space is actually very generous and took 2 large and 2 small cases easily.

In terms of roads, I covered around 2000 miles in all of that area last year.

The best roads I found with North of New York state, it was around this time last year and I watched the NASCAR at the Glen, and all of the roads around the Glen are fabulous and very twisty in places.

Plus you have the Catskill mountains to drive though, an easy sell to the missus as well as you can visit the complex/hotel where dirty dancing was filmed....

You're clearly doing it wrong.

The Camaro has a USB sockeet and a 3.5mm phono. You can also stream via Bluetooth.

You can put the TCS in 'competitive' mode, as opposed to switching it off (why would you?) by pressing the TCS button twice quickly.

Rear seats fold for extra luggage space. The boot is plenty large enough, although the opening is quite restrictive.

Perhaps I should have added "using normal driving procedures"?

I suppose I could have held it against the brakes. smash Feel free to share your techniques...thumbup

Traction control info very useful thanks. There is no point hiring this over a Prius unless you can enjoy it a bit!

You need to go through the booking stages to get the price for some rental places, A Camaro SS at LAX is approx £61 a day or less if you book it for longer.

Weekend days are around £25 cheaper than weekdays

Can't help on the USB - never looked, but note the 'slot' for the boot [trunk wink] on a Camaro is far smaller than the boot lid itself, and disproportionately small for the boot size. Although there was space for a fair amount of luggage in the boot, it was tricky to get even medium-sized cases actually into the boot - don't take large hard-shell luggage! Dodge Challenger boot is about the same size, but 'slot' to get luggage in is bigger.

booked a convertible SS with budget at lax. Budget SS's dont have sirus. My advice would be to buy an aux cable, it will always come in handy and the best part of an aux cable is that as they use the headphone jack of the phone/ipod they use very very little battery, only down side is that you cant control the phone/ipod from the radio but i never had any problems with that.

Just be aware about the insurance, not sure if its similar with hertz but budget would not let me take out any insurance against the car itself(only applies to ss's), they would only let me take out insurance against 3rd party damage so it was a bit nerve wrecking at times knowing how anal some rental companies can be with damage.

The selection on Sirius is immense, hardly minority. Whole stations dedicated to a genre, decade etc.

I thought that too. While I wouldnt say that it is worth paying a monthly subscription for its definitely a bonus when its included in a rental. Channels include stuff like BBC world news, kids stuff, Nascar channel, playboy Chanel, gospel, 40s, 50s etc etc

Another thumbs up for the Camaro here. I had one for 2 weeks and drove around Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. Loved it.

I got a phenomenal deal with Hertz by booking a Luxury class car for quite cheap, then haggling an upgrade when I got there. I didn't realise at the time but the 20% off code I used when booked the original car carried over to the upgrade price as well.
