I hate you people!! Road trip coming....
Discussion
well all this talk on here of road-trips has now stirred me into action... next week I'm looking at going on a jolly little 1,700 mile jaunt...
Londonish
Riems
Furka Pass
Gotthard tunnel (or pass not sure yet!)
Neu Schwanstein
Rhine Valley
The Ring (be rude not to have a peek!)
Londonish
just checked out that all the bits 'n' bobs on the car work like they should (touch wood they do!!). Get ADAC cover tomorrow, visit Halfrauds for hi-vis-vests, bulbs, fuses etc check credit card can take a battering and then we're just about ready
Only thing I'm unsure about is the legality of satnavs in France as mine shows speedscamera locations and I'd rather not full foul of les Gendarmes...
Any other thoughts to remember?

Top tip: check the forecasts for the passes before you set off. Just coz it's warm and dry at the bottom, doesn't mean it ain't snowing at the top.
This was me at the top of Nufenenpass last Saturday...
And this was near the top of Grimsel...
More than a little worrying, especially in a tail-happy 80's saloon with no "driver aids" and less than perfect summer tyres!

Theoretically you need breathalysers for France, but plod aren't enforcing until November.
In Switzerland you'll need a 40 CHF vignette for the main roads and autoroutes. And you also need a GB sticker, even if your reg plate has GB on it.
We head home tomorrow. We've done 1550 miles in the last fortnight. Will be a smidge over 1900 by the time we get home tomorrow evening.
Great fun - enjoy!!

Good God - I just looked at Eurotunnel prices for the times I'm looking to go... £329 ONE fkING WAY!!! Guess I'm going on the ferry then - which is kinda nice brings back childhood memories of the holiday only really starting once we got on the ferry
Great shout about the weather in the mountains would never have thought of that (D'oh!!!) and thanks for the info about vignettes

Well I finally did it I went on a (semi)planned road trip through Europe... the initial idea was to take a 4 day trip and take in the Millau Bridge and region. After looking at bits and bobs we decided to forgo Millau this year and ended up plumping for Southern Germany, a proposed trip of some 1,700 miles in a week.
Well the idea was good if a little optimistic on the mileage front - we actually ended up doing 2,500 miles in a week and had a real blast doing so.
Took a few pictures en-route so hopefully you peeps on here will find them interesting/fun.
07.30 ferry time - horrible time in the morning and the mood isn't helped by the equal worst meal of the trip
this is better Riems is a lovely looking town
and just outside is (for a petrol-head) even better
After that it's off to the Swiss Alps for a little drive through the Furka Pass and an encounter with a glacier (or as I seemed to think - the world's largest popsicle!).
Navigation and forward planning not being one of my strong suits I found out that the pass is (for us to all intents and purposes) one way but that did mean that I got to ride on a car-train back through the mountain and from then on through the Alpen Pass on to a lovely overnight stay at the hotel and it actually snowed overnight YAY!!!
From there on in it was off to Fusen and 'Mad' king Ludwig's Castle (guess where Disney got his inspiration from!!)
A brief stop-off at my home town (and a surprise hi to a local XF) was followed up with a visit to the scene of one of the most shameful parts of modern history - Dachau
Back on the brighter side a nice steady 120mph cruise to the MohneSee Dam (of the Dambusters fame) and then back down to the Nurburgring (thought a better car than the XF was to be found here lol)
Finally on to Aachen a 1,200 year old cathedral and the largest piece of cake I've been offered in many years!
As an aside the worst driving I saw on holiday was by the Belgians - appalling!!
