We're planning to drive to France next year for 2 weeks during the Wit School Holiday (24th May 2013) with our 2 boys - will be 3 and 5 at the time of travel.

Does anyone have any good recommendations? We'd like to be towards the south of France due to going in May and wanting decent weather, although we'll be getting the ferry to St Malo. Things we're looking for :

Kid friendly, with plenty for them to do - pool, games, playpark etc
Good onsite facilities
Not crowded
Static Caravans available for hire (don't actually want to camp so this is essential)
Near either the beach or a large lake with facilities
close to a nice town or village

We've been looking at few place in Vendee and have obviously looked at all the Keycamp and Eurocamp places, but I always find first hand recommendations are better, plus booking direct with campsites halves the cost.

Cheers

The Vendée isn't any where near the south of France confused

The Loire is seen as the border between British type weather and Mediterranean type. If you want better weather keep going south. I'm sure other PHers will have recommendations in the Dordogne! Also, St Malo might get you further south than other Channel ports, but Caen gives better connections to the South proper.

Hence my comment "towards" the south, not "the South". We don't want Brittany, but neither do we want a 10hr drive once in France. Where we've been looking is just to the north of La Rochelle so south of the Loire.

Max drive we're prepared to do once in France is circa 5hrs, so anything that fits that bill would be great.

Can recommend the Siblu sites around Royan / Le Palmyre.

We recently spent 2 weeks on the Les Charmettes site and had a great time.

Cheers. What did you like about the site/area? I have to "sell" this to Mrs JQ, so could do with some supporting evidence.

Site was clean, tidy and a great place for the kids - kids clubs ( if you need some quiet time witthe Mrs wink , loads of swimming pools, water chutes etc.

One of the best and biggest zoos in Western Europe on the doormstep, Cognac is about an hours drive away and La Rochelle about the same.

Plenty of cycle paths / cycle lanes and generally a friendly atmosphere to the area.

Compared to the South of France (Frejus / St Raphael area), it was quiet, not as hot (Mrs Egg is a ginge so too much sun not always welcome !) and clean & tidy.

As a place to relax and chill whilst the kids play, we'd recommend it.

Have a look at Camping Dunes just North of Tranche sur Mer in the Vendee. Location for the beach is great (big waves and miles of sand) and a direct walk from the site, pools are fine, we rented a van from Matthews France. La Tranche is nice, classic Vendee seaside town.

Was a couple of years ago but is definitely still there, my kids loved it.

Oh wow, I remember going on holiday to this campsite back in the late 80s/early 90s. It was owned by Haven back then, probably has changed a hell of a lot since then, but I remember going on trips to the surrounding area - Beach, Zoo etc. Had a great time smile

Have a look at Canvas Holidays. We stayed at Camping Les Biches, St hilaire, Vendee and it was excellent.

Vendée regular, here. smile

We stay here:
http://www.camping-baiedaunis.com/EMP2_GB.htm
The 1st time we stayed there our then 1st daughter was 1. She's 11 1/2 now and we've been evry year since she was 1! The younger one, now 10, also loves this place.

There are also a couple of other places locally that have Eurocamp in the same town, La Tranche sur Mer.
We prefer the "Baie" as it's the closest to the beach, which is massive - tide goes out a couple of hundred metres, and we investigated all those surrounding sites by bicycle this May. They weren't as good, in our opinion.
