Hi all, the wonderful search facility is unable to locate a thread I recall seeing in here on 'things to do in Berlin'. Does anyone recall this - has anyone got a link?

I've been there on numerous occasion for business, but never for pleasure - Mrs HH and I will be there Thursday through Sunday this week, and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

Cheers in advance....

We did a walking tour, it took about 6-7 hours but felt like a lot less. The guide was excellent and the others on the tour were great too.

http://www.brewersberlintours.com/tours I think tour 1 was the one we did. Excellent value for money as well.

The company was originally set up by a British Secret Service guy who operated in Berlin during the cold war, the knowledge of the guides is staggering, they all have to pass an exam prior to taking tours on their own.

I think the old boy who set this up only does a handful of tours per week now, but the other guides are pretty decent too. The Fat Tire bicycle tour of the city is worthwhile, we covered quite a distance including stuff that the wife (a Berlin old hand) had never seen before, for instance, the big Soviet war memorial. Other stuff I've liked there; currywurst, Prater, currywurst, dinner up the telly tower and, er, currywurst. If anything the old East is nicer and quirker to stay in, the West side of the city saw a fair bit of 1960s and 1970s development that the East never saw. The Circus line of hostels and hotels are pretty cheap, unusual and clean. Now they are doing apartments, which I think we'll use next time.

It's a fantastic city, love it. Going back next summer. smilebeer

I last did the tour in 2006 and I believe he has now retired but the other guides are all great.

The Russian war memorial is one of my favourites too. We stayed near the base of the tv tower in the old east but I can't remember the name of the hotel.

We went for a short break in May. One of the bus tours is good value because you get two days entitlement in the ticket which means you can use it as local transport as well. I can't remember the name but the buses were yellow. The Holocaust Museum is a must and the Telecom Tower was good value as well. You can easily fill 3 days. In general the bars and restaurants were good value. We stayed in the old Eastern area. It's rapidly being developed but enough left to remind you of the bland austerity.
