Hey guys, i have a new house with a new combi boiler.

I dont know if i am running it the cheapest way or even a way to preserve the boilers life, below is what i do.

I set the mode to economy for the radiators. I keep it off heating when i can and manually turn the heating on when its cold using the boiler and obviously adjusting the thermostat. I have a few radiators turned off, my spare room and bathroom radiators are off. Throughout the day i kind of do 2 quick blasts of heating, 20-30 minutes each time and then turn it off.

Would it be cheaper to keep the boiler on etc or is the way im doing it ok?

Sounds ok what you are doing, but I would open the other radiators
every now and again just to get the water circulated.
I dont think you need to do a heating blast twice a day !!
Only run heating when you need it.
Getting it regularly serviced is a must.

Missed your other post, the only way to check the cost
would be to check your meter, then run it for the hour,
then recheck the meter.
Whatever the difference is is how much it uses every hour,
that is assuming normal loading.
Then find out how much you pay per unit.

There is never a definitive answer to this question.

I have a programmable room stat with my combi. I set it for a few hours in the morning at 19.5 degrees, then 16:30-22:00 at 19.5 degrees, upstairs rads are set to 2.5 on the TRVs, as are the rooms we use downstairs. Rooms that aren't used are set to 1 on the TRVs.

Just make the most of TRVs and your room stat. I personally don't see any point in heating a house when you are not there, some may argue that it uses more energy to bring a house up to temp again, but the beauty of a programmable room stat is that you can set a lower temperature limit, so the house will never get too cold.

well i only do it twice a day because its coldest in the morning and at night. Once i put the heating on the house is warm within 20 minutes, i was just hoping i wasent damaging it by turning it on for 20 minutes, not let it work properly and then turning it back off etc. Well i have the radiators not in use on a frost protection system instead of 0, is this the same?

Yes that would be the same, i.e. the star on a TRV valve.
