I'm travelling economy to the US in December for work (my choice to fly economy rather than business so I could fly my choice of airline to accrue Avios points). How do I book a seat in advance? From experience, when using the online check in, even if you are on the ball and check in 24 hrs in advance as soon as you are able, all the good seats have already gone!

Thanks in advance.

Go to ‘manage my booking’ on their website (you’ll need your booking reference number) and click on seating under the relevant flight tab in your booking details. From there you can pay to reserve a seat (price depends on short haul, long haul, etc.) or alternatively wait till 24 hours before and see what is left in the check-in scrum for free.

If you’re flying solo I’d personally not bother paying and wait for check-in.

Thanks. I'll see what the costs are.

On long haul economy BA it's £25 for a seat and £35 or maybe £50 for a seat with nothing in front of it like an emergency exit or bulkhead. I flew to NYC last year and at the last minute an upgrade to Traveler plus was offered at £100 one-way down from £800 odd yikes so I took it which was nice as it was pretty empty but I have used it again and it was packed and I didn't really see the point or expense.

I hope you got a lot of Avios points. I fly economy when I'm paying, but it would take a huge chunk of cash / miles / points for me to go economy vs business if someone else was paying.
