I did most of it in September, went from la up to San Francisco then to Vegas. We then started on the actual Route 66 up to Chicago.
I really enjoyed it, lots of random stuff to see along the route. The cowboy museum in Oklahoma is a must see if you like that sort of stuff. The halfway point is pretty cool, there's a pick up truck there that you can leave your mark on so make sure you take a sharpie. There's also something called the Cadillac ranch near Amarillo where you can spray graffiti not some cars planted in the ground so make sure you buy some spray paint. Whilst in Amarillo also make sure you visit the big Texan ranch as shown on man vs food.
There is obviously a lot of driving per day, we did roughly 200 miles or so a day which took us about 9 hours because of stops etc.

My Wife and I did Route 66 in April a couple of years ago and had a fantastic time. Be prepared for every type of weather. We had floods to snow to 100 degrees heat in Las Vegas.
Alot of the road is still there and mostly quite well sign posted.
I have a TYRE route of the whole journey planned out PM me if you would like it.
Once home tonight I check a few places to visit or stay I can recommend.

I was thinking about a road trip the other day and found this site: http://www.roadtripusa.com/ - it breaks down each of the routes by state and what there is to see along the way - quite fancy the great northern myself.

I did a bit of Rte 66 last month, we did a section from Williams Arizona to Needles California. In my opinion i thought it was crap, the road was nice to drive but all the tat stuck all over the surviving buildings ruins it completely. I know they're trying to get the tourists in and i appreciate that but compared to buildings that are actually restored to 50's style which look amazing they are awful. The people you meet are nice and have great stories but do you really need a rusting car in front of every other store/museum etc?
We saw some great old Motels which were kept in the style of the 50's and they were great but there were too many places covered in stuff that had nothing to do with the road or its history. I'd hope the parts of the road in the north might be better, i know we only did a tiny part of it but it just wasn't what i thought it would be.
Oh, and Oatman? What a hole that was although the roads were amazing in a Camaro!
